We are looking for a capable, enthusiastic, dedicated individual to join our team. Deliver high quality adult education classes in a community setting that helps participants improve their lives.

Sound Learning is a non-profit organization that provides education for adults through community-based tutoring and classes in Mason and Thurston Counties. Our mission is to “educate adults to succeed and contribute to their community”. This position requires the ability to facilitate in-person learning with beginning level English language learners, as well as provide distance learning opportunities. We are looking for someone with conversational Spanish skills who will be able to communicate directly with participants.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Instructor Position:

The ESOL Instructor will facilitate English language learning (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and math) with adults and out of school youth (16+) who are immigrant learners. The instructor will teach face-to-face 4 evenings per week in Shelton. This position requires the ability to facilitate interactive learning with limited English speakers. Use of technology is required. Our program values learner-centered instruction and the use of volunteers. The ESOL Instructor will work collaboratively with a team of instructors to plan, teach, and create curriculum for ESOL classes. Students will also participate in distance learning activities during the week. This is a part-time, hourly position.

Qualifications: Experience and Education

Required:

 Conversational Spanish skills.

 Basic familiarity with technology: E-mail, MS Word, Excel

 Some college required OR HS Diploma and 1 year of relevant work experience.

 Willingness to learn new skills.

Preferred:

 Some experience in an education setting, can be as a volunteer.

 Experience in adult education or ESOL instruction.

Skills/Abilities:

 Effectively teach adults and out of school youth in-line with standards and best practices.

 Effectively communicate with limited English speakers.

 Follow organizational guidelines.

 Create level appropriate in-person and distance assignments and video-based lessons.

 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Google Suite a plus.

 Work collaboratively as part of a team, and independently without direct supervision.

 Highly organized with effective problem-solving skills

 Strong English language, reading, & writing skills.

Schedule: 20 hours per week. Training provided. Instruction time: Mon-Thurs 6:00-8:30 pm.

Pay: $20 per hour

Preferred start date: April 8th, 2024. Position will remain open until filled.

Responsibilities: ESOL Instructor

 Collaborate with ESOL Program Managers, under the supervision of the Executive Director, to create curriculum, teach students, document attendance, and mentor volunteer tutors.

 Coordinate with staff to complete intake and obtain goal-setting information on new students.

 Proctor CASAS tests and interpret diagnostic tools.

 Provide level appropriate instruction around students’ goals and priorities, based on organizational best practices, 4 eves/wk M - Th.

 Design interactive, standards-based lessons and activities that incorporate learner-centered themes and approaches.

 Utilize online learning programs, MS Office Programs and Google Suite to teach technology skills and provide distance assignments to students.

 Submit documented attendance weekly; maintain and update student files.

 Assess and document progress and re-visit goals with continuing students.

 Identify students who qualify for CASAS post-testing and implement testing in coordination with ESOL Program Managers.

 Call and text students regarding their participation and any barriers to attendance.

 Submit data for quarterly reporting in a timely manner. Attend staff meetings.

 Participate in new staff orientation and professional development opportunities to improve instructional practices and keep current in the field of adult education.
