Job Title: Field Organizing Staff

Job Description: UAW 4591(An Academic Student Employee (ASE) Union at Washington State University) is looking for talented organizers to support ongoing work of the local and help build a strong member-led union. These individuals will report to the UAW 4591 Personnel Committee for assignment of weekly tasks and/or scheduling. This job will primarily consist of engaging directly with ASEs at WSU primarily in person, though text, phone, and zoom/email may be required. The ideal candidates will have previous labor organizing experience. At this time, only part time positions are available.

Job Location: The WSU Pullman Campus will be the primary organizing location. Well-qualified candidates co-located in a city with a WSU campus may be considered but must be able to be physically present in Pullman for at least 75% of the total hourly commitment for the duration of the contract, and will not be compensated for travel to and from the Pullman campus nor for lodging or per diem while working in Pullman.

Job Duration: February 2025 (or ASAP) through May 15th 2025

Responsibilities:

Labor organizing tasks

Orienting new ASEs in 30 minute contract orientation sessions

Conduct one on one organizing conversations focused on building majority membership

Sign up workers as union members, and answer questions as needed about benefits, rights and protections in the UAW-WSU Collective bargaining agreement

Help to build union capacity for collective actions

Recruit and train workplace leaders in departments and campus wide

Contract enforcement tasks

Aid in contacting potential grievants for large-scale grievances if needed, and at the discretion of the personnel committee

Research as needed at the discretion of the personnel committee

Ability to work an average of 10 hours per week

Desired Skills:

Good verbal and written communication skills

Reading comprehension/willingness to learn and understand UAW 4591 Collective Bargaining Agreement

Good at self-direction

Conversant in Google suite (sheets, docs, gmail, etc.)

Job Requirements

Possession of cell phone/computer and willingness to use them for organizing activities

Ability to meet with workers in a variety of locations. Speak with workers both one on one, and in groups.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to: performing orientations for new ASEs, answering questions regarding the UAW-WSU collective bargaining agreement, recruiting ASEs for direct actions, membership meetings, and social events, and appropriate data entry to ensure member databases remain up to date.

Able to work an average of 10 hours per week, with at least 75% of the total work time for the employment period occurring in Pullman, WA.

Compensation:

This is a part-time salaried position with an expectation of an average work commitment of 10 hours per week.

Qualified candidates will be compensated at the appropriate salary level for their education level at the rates set forth in the current UAW-WSU collective bargaining agreement:

Degree Level

0.25 monthly compensation (10 hours per week, Pullman, Gross monthly wage)

Completed Bachelor’s. Degree

1159.25/month

Completed Master’s Degree

1218.5/month

Completed Preliminary Exam

1280.5/month

If the qualified candidate does not fall within one of the above categories, their compensation will be pro-rated commensurate with their experience, will be negotiated prior to hiring, and will not be less than 26.35/hour, nor more than 33.80/hour.

This position does not include health insurance benefits at this time

This position does not include tuition reimbursement benefits at this time

Well-performing staff may be hired in the future for a half-time (20 hour per week) position with insurance and tuition benefits if union finances allow

This position accrues vacation time at a rate of 1 hour for every 20 hours worked to be taken in 2 hour increments (2 hours = 1 day of work)

This position accrues sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked, to be taken as needed

This position receives the same paid holidays as those set forth in the current UAW-WSU collective bargaining agreement
