About Discovery Sea Kayaks

We are a small sea kayak tour company based in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. We started the company as a small group of individuals passionate about paddling and sharing the outdoor experience with others. As time has passed we have grown and have decided to keep our staff small and adhere to our small company roots. We hire a few talented outgoing individuals with diverse backgrounds and provide them with the proper training to become the best in the industry.

Qualifications:

Current First Aid and CPR certificate (Must have before you arrive for training)

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Positive attitude and desire to learn

Hard-working and flexible

Must be physically fit and able to lift at least 75lbs overhead

Responsibilities:

Operate all kayak tours to company standards.

Complete in-house company training (see below)

Off-the-water duties include pack-up and clean-up, basic gear maintenance, grounds maintenance, shuttle driving, and time at our downtown storefront location.

Adhere to all laws and guidelines regarding behavior around wildlife on the water.

Season: May through early October

Training:

We are known for providing a very extensive training program. We perform our training sessions in the areas where guides will be paddling. All guides are provided with dry suits, paddle equipment, and safety gear. Before leading kayak tours all guides will learn all skills necessary to competently operate tours to Discovery standards. Prospective guides can expect training to be rigorous and rewarding. Guides will also learn about local wildlife, history, etc. to provide a cohesive and informative tour. The final step of our guide training involves a "shadow" period in which prospective guides first tag along with seasoned guide's on kayak tours. Next, they will lead a tour and be shadowed by one of our seasoned guides to ensure they are ready to guide on their own.

We look forward to working with strong, competent individuals with good leadership skills and the desire to work and play outdoors!
