Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op is looking to hire a General Laborer & Bottom Painter.
The General Laborer & Bottom Painter is a valuable member of our experienced team of marine trade professionals. The typical tasks of an entry-level General Laborer at PTSC include assisting others, preparing vessels, using hand tools, depending on customer needs and your skill set and experience. You will work in the shop and on boats at our facility in the The Port Townsend Boatyard at the Port of Port Townsend. The length, scope and complexity of each project varies and you will get to work alongside other marine trades professionals such as shipwrights, electricians, mechanics, riggers, and metal workers.
Contributing to the success of the General Laborer are efficiency, tidiness, safety and speed, as well as communication skills and teamwork, physical strength and stamina, and the ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.
What You Might Be Asked To Do
Prepare and protect vessel for work, build and set up scaffolding
Scrape, sand and paint boat bottoms
Report to and communicate with the job lead or manager daily
Assist others, run errands, fire watch
Sweep floors, empty trash cans
Sand overhead, vacuum sandblast for 8 hours a day
Use hand tools, including needlegun, blowtorches, jackhammers, drills, saws, pressure washers, grinders
Grind metal and fiberglass
Drive company vehicles, handle forklift
Clean boats, polish metal
Provide shop-level general painting
Cut plugs
Handle basic repairs and maintenance
Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs
Handle and transport chemicals and supplies
Clean and store tools and equipment
Know and follow health and safety regulations
Accept direction, ask questions and communicate and work with crew
Perform research
Have patience for repetitive tasks
Pay attention to process and detail
Perform all aspects of vessel painting/finishing including bottom paint
Understand basic paint and varnish systems as well as procedures, tools and techniques for surface preparation
Understand importance of vessel protection and clean work
Other duties as assigned
