This position is responsible for the health, welfare, and movement of livestock by performing the listed duties. This position works very closely with the Cattle Supervisor, the Hospital crew and the Yard Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ride pens per daily schedule identifying sickness and injuries
- Accurately record all sick ”pulled” cattle removed from pens on pull slip
- Accurately record pens ridden on cowboy pen map daily before end of shift
- Move cattle safely from pen to pen as directed
- Assist in sorting fat cattle as needed and directed
- Assist in loading and unloading cattle trucks as per schedule
- Furnish their own tack and horses
- Feed & care for those horses
Marginal
- Assist in processing cattle as directed
- Assist in doctoring cattle as required
- Clean water tanks as needed
- Maintain yard housekeeping standards
- Other tasks or duties as required by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to recognize sick & injured cattle and skillfully pull them out of the pen and move to hospital
- Must have good horsemanship skills
- Must have full knowledge of cattle handling skills
- Must be able to count cattle accurately
- Horse & cattle background is essential
- Excellent safety skills and awareness needed
- Must be a team player
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Mostly very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally
- Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Person subject to both inside & outside weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions
- Must be able to ride a horse 8-10 hours per day
- Haul and feed 120-pound hay bales
- Open & close gates, using occasional force

- Identify and pull all sick & injured animals without missing any
