System Engineer - I

Position Objective: The System Engineer is responsible for the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of 1stMILE’s production information technology systems by implementing, monitoring, supporting, and optimizing of the network software, hardware, application and associated operating systems.

Position Responsibilities: Key Responsibilities for all levels include:

Support data center operations dealing with various levels of technical complexity.

Installing, configuring, and maintaining data center production and pre-production systems.

Work with development teams to triage and diagnose issues in production.

Administer remote and onsite IT support of operating systems, networks, application software, security devices, and computer hardware.

Familiarity/understanding of DevOps and Infrastructure as Code concepts and processes.

Familiarity, commensurate to interested position, with OnPrem or Cloud-based tools that would aid and support internal use of: Configuration Management, Orchestration, and Provisioning – exposure to specific tools and techniques including, but not limited to: Linux/Windows scripting ([power]shell, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS

Conduct root cause analysis for troubleshooting network connectivity, telephony, OS and server problems.

Construct and support monitoring systems responding to alerts to keep system healthy.

Actively participate in a program of continuous improvement of development documentation.

Daily review of system logs to ensure system and application security and continuity.

System hardening to CIS or equivalent standards, including assessment of specific standards for our environment.

Compliance tracking related to these tasks.

Perform other related duties as assigned and necessary.

Expected Level of Responsibility encompassing the above by position:

Level 1

Plans and builds an organization's systems infrastructure.

Implements, modifies, and designs information system.

Monitors the performance of systems.

Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.

Knowledge/Credentials/Experience —

All Levels: High School diploma or equivalent – required.

Level 3+: BS or BA degree in Computer Science, or related field – preferred.

Number of years of recent progressive systems and network management experience designing and implementing software systems, applications, and related products in a Microsoft Windows and/or Linux/Unix environment. Beginner to two years experience.

Extensive knowledge and experience in server operating systems such as Oracle Enterprise Linux, Redhat Enterprise Linux, Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware vSphere, NAS or SAN, and other current technology – required. Beginner to two years.

Strong knowledge of one or more of the following: Bash, ksh, Java, Perl, Python, Powershell, etc.

Level 1: 0-2 Years of 1 or more of these

Equivalent combination of formal IT industry related education and comparable work experience may be considered.

Thorough knowledge of software, hardware, and network applications.

Level 1: 0-2 Years

Strong knowledge of network infrastructure and IP networking.

Level 1: 0-2 Years

Preferred:

Certifications in Microsoft Server OS and related products

Linux Server OS and related products (Redhat, Oracle, AWS preferred)

AWS Certifications

CEH or Pen Test certifications

Elastic, Splunk or similar certifications

Skills & Ability -

All levels: Excellent business communication skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information verbally and in writing; with the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English well.

Physical characteristics—

Work may involve the constant use of computer screens, report reading, and sitting throughout the day.

Ability to operate a computer keyboard for typing, telephone and mouse all of which often requires dexterity of hands and fingers with repetitive wrist and hand motion.

Typically sitting at a desk or table; intermittently standing, stooping, bending at the waist, climbing, kneeling, or crouching to file materials or install equipment, as needed. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. (e.g., files, boxes, equipment).

Talk, hear, read printed material, utilize a computer, and professionally communicate over the telephone.

Environmental factors/Working conditions—

Climate controlled office environment.

Work involves being able to concentrate on the matter at hand, under sometimes distracting work conditions and frequent Team Member and/or customer contacts and interruptions during the day.

Need for occasional travel.

Regular business hours, situational evenings, holidays, and weekends depending on business needs.

Regular On Call duties
