The Public Works Department currently has multiple seasonal positions for 2024:
Maintenance Aide III - Facilities (6-mo)
o Season runs April 1 - September 27
Maintenance Aide III - Streets (6-mo)
o Season runs April 29 - October 25
Maintenance Aide III - Solid Waste (6-mo)
o Season runs April 15 to October 11
Maintenance Aide III - Fleet (3-mo)
o Season runs June 3 to September 6
This position will start at Step 1 $18.21/hour. Employees receive step increases in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement and City policy. The 2023 full hourly range for this position is $18.21 - $22.36.
Benefit Information:
Three-Month Seasonal Positions: City of Bellingham employees receive access to our employee assistance program. This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law. Employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
Six-Month Seasonal Positions: City of Bellingham employees receive access to our employee assistance program. All eligible City employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems pension plan. This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law. Employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
This position becomes represented by the Local 1937 bargaining unit after the completion of 1040 hours working an average of at least 12 hours per week, on an annual basis. When union-eligible, employees will receive paid holidays per the holiday schedule during their employment period.

NATURE OF WORK:
This position performs seasonal grounds and facilities maintenance. Specific duties depend upon program area assigned which include multiple divisions within the Public Works Department. Performs a variety of manual labor in the construction, maintenance, repair, operation and service work of all Public Works facilities. Operates hand and power tools and motorized equipment. Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes and/or operations and will be performed cooperatively with other employees and completed in a manner that assures individual, co-worker and public safety in all weather and working conditions. Program area assignments may change from day to day depending upon Department needs. May be assigned to work independently or directly with a crew. May be called out for emergency work. May be assigned to lead a crew of lower classified staff with responsibility for transporting crew members to job sites and providing on-site instruction and day-to-day direction.
