Mt Baker Products is a premier manufacturer of decorative plywood used for cabinetry, furniture, and interiors throughout North America. Our company uses veneers like cherry, walnut, and oak to produce high-end panels for the woodworking industry.

We are now hiring a full-time Boiler Tender for our Bellingham plywood mill. This role will be responsible for supporting the Maintenance Department in keeping the physical plant functioning to meet production needs.

About this Position:

Summary: Under supervision and direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, position monitors and maintains boiler operations, including the use and maintenance of equipment necessary for boiler system operations.

Schedule: Graveyard (overnight) schedule will be Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 pm to 7:00 am.

Starting Pay: $25.00 to $28.00 /hour, depending on qualifications and skill level.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Operate, maintain and monitor; the boiler operation and fuel conveyor system, water treatment and analysis program; steam and condensate systems for (boiler & mill) on steam plant. Maintain Boiler Operation procedure book and files.

2. Prepare logbooks, reports, charts, and meters.

3. Monitor emission to maintain and comply with NWCAA and the State of Washington ASME boiler pressure vessel codes.

4. Operate pertinent control devices to maintain safe boiler operation.

5. Perform boiler walk every two (2) hours: check water levels, valves, valve packing pipes, bearings augers, blowers, fans, hydraulics, conveyors, fuse boxes, fuse breakers, pumps, cooling systems, alarms, safety devices, temperatures, pressures, fuel system, drive system, filters, control devices, all pertinent boiler data.

6. Make repairs and perform maintenance duties, as assigned, to include cleanup (shoveling, sweeping, spill kit) and minor electrical and welding tasks, using hand and power tools.

7. Report any downtime immediately to Department Supervisor/Maintenance Supervisor. Obtain prior authorization before making any repairs or adjustments. Escalate safety concerns to Department Supervisor, as appropriate.

8. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as assigned, which may include gloves, safety glasses, earplugs, coveralls, and dust mask.

Qualifications/Skills Needed

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following qualifications and demonstrated skills:

1. Boiler experience is NOT a requirement; however proven ability in machinery operation and maintenance is essential. Prior experience in a commercial building (such as a warehouse or manufacturing plant) is highly desirable. Professional training or related courses in facilities maintenance helpful.

2. Ability to read and instruction manuals, parts manuals, safety manuals; written directions, posted policies and bulletins.

3. Ability to perform basic math in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

4. Ability to identify safety concerns on equipment and machinery, use and promote the use of PPE.

5. Ability to take supervisory direction and work cooperatively across departments; ability to be flexible with changing work priorities, project assignments, interruptions, and varying levels of workload.

6. Ability to effectively and timely communicate status reports and request assistance or resources, as needed, to supervisor.

8. Ability to accept changes of work schedule; work non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.

Work Environment:

The employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles/wood dust. The employee may be required to work in cold or hot temperatures, which may change rapidly, according to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderate to loud.

Physical Requirements:

The employee will be walking, standing, and engaging in movement throughout the day, and occasionally to frequently required to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Due to the large variety of job duties (both routine and non-routine), certain duties may involve a variety of physical activities including bending, lifting, stooping, turning, twisting, pushing, pulling, raising arms above shoulders and head, standing, working in enclosed areas, climbing stairs or ladders (up to 20 feet), and operating heavy machinery. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.
