About Upward Bound:

Upward Bound is a U.S. Department of Education grant designed to increase postsecondary enrollment and graduation rates of participating students. The grant funds the Upward Bound Whatcom Community College program, which provides year-round academic support and college readiness opportunities for sixty program participants. The program serves students from communities marginalized by the institution of higher education, including youth from low-income backgrounds who will be among the first generation in their families to graduate from college. Upward Bound Whatcom Community College provides direct services to students from Ferndale, Nooksack, and Mount Baker High schools and supports the mission of Whatcom Community College to provide outreach and services to local communities.

The Summer Academy utilizes an Experiential Learning framework (Kolb) to develop hands-on, student-centered, and rigorous academic courses offered annually from June through August. The Summer Academy program includes courses in English, Math, Lab Science, and World Languages in combination with field experiences, service-learning projects, cultural activities, peer groups, and work-study to support and create a rich learning experience for high school students.

About the position:

We are looking for people who have the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of Upward Bound students this summer. Our instructors are passionate educators willing to share their knowledge and learn alongside participants to encourage growth and learning in your field of expertise. Summer Instructors will work as part of an instructional and student support team and reports to the Director of Upward Bound who provides supervision and guidance throughout the program.

Schedule: Includes preparation, teaching, staff collaboration, and weekly staff meetings during the 2024 Summer Academy.

Dates to plan for:

June 1st-16th: Curriculum preparation

June 17h -July 26th: Up to 8 hours of classroom instruction weekly, delivered in-person on the Whatcom Community College Campus.

July 26th: Final Celebration.

August 9th: Student grade assessment and program evaluations due.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

-Attend initial training and ongoing program team meetings.

-Work cooperatively with other instructors and program staff to prepare course and implement outcome and inquiry-based curriculum.

-Teach and mentor students.

- Consider varied learning needs of students to differentiate/individualize instruction, as well as provide group and experiential learning instruction, so that all students can learn effectively.

-Assess, evaluate, record, and report student performance.

-Prepare pre-assessments & post-assessments to demonstrate student growth.

-Facilitate a respectful, culturally relevant, experiential, and cooperative learning environment.

-Attend weekly faculty meetings and staff meetings as required.

-Create & submit lesson plans, syllabus, and final student evaluations for program documentation.

Candidate must demonstrate:

Abilities to:

-Develop engaging, hands-on lessons for diverse learners that will encourage growth in the following subject:

Math (Geometry/Algebra1 and Algebra 2/Pre-Calc).

-Be willing to relate to students' lived experiences and incorporate their cultural wealth of knowledge into the learning environment.

-Be able and willing to use technology, PowerPoint, Canvas and software such as word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, and internet browsers in classroom teaching.

-Attend class field trips (TBD).

Minimum Qualifications:

-Possess or pursuing a Teaching Certificate in relevant discipline and teaching experience OR Candidate that demonstrates sufficient education and work experience in related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Demonstrated successful teaching experience with Upward Bound or with similarly underserved students.

Salary:

-Hourly rate of $42.71 per hour, total hours for instruction and meeting time to be determined.
