Whatcom Community College invites applications for a Part-Time Hourly, Upward Bound Summer Academy Mentor. Whatcom Community College's Upward Bound program is a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and is designed to encourage, and support 60 students in Whatcom County to complete high school, and prepare them to enter, and complete a postsecondary education program. The program serves students at Ferndale, Nooksack, and Mount Baker high schools, with a focus on serving potential first-generation college students.
TRIO Upward Bound Summer Mentors are current college students selected and trained to support the target populations of the Upward Bound program through mentorship, individual and group activities. TRIO Upward Bound Summer Mentors help set the tone of inclusiveness, academic curiosity, and responsibility.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
-Be able and willing to use and learn how to use technology, PowerPoint, Canvas, Zoom, Jabber and software such as word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, and internet browsers in classroom teaching.
-Maintain confidentiality of student information.
-Support students in meeting the academic rigor of the summer program by modeling positive student habits, such as curiosity, engagement, good time management, and thoughtfulness towards fellow classmates and teachers.
-Positively re-direct students to complete classroom assignments and group activities.
-Engaging with students throughout the day.
-Get to know participants, be approachable, and make yourself available to meet during summer programming.
-Work with students to help them identify their strengths.
-Mentor small groups and 1-1 with students.
-Greet students at the buses, take attendance, hand out name tags, and other duties as assigned each morning.
-Plan and facilitate lunch activities.
-Plan and facilitate morning opener activities.
-As a mentor team, set up and take-down the day's activities.
-Support UB staff to supervise students during off-campus field trips and college tours.
-Support academy instructors to teach and facilitate curriculum.
Salary and Hours:
-This is a part-time hourly, non-permanent position with a wage of $19.00 per hour. Total hours for instruction and meeting time to be determined.
Dates to plan for:
-June 16th-July 25th.
-July 25th; final celebration.
