SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

The School Administrator is the instructional leader of the school, providing leadership in creating and managing a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment where all students can excel and staff are empowered. The school administrator communicates a vision of high expectations, performance, and collaboration with staff and students while engaging families and community partners in the support of student achievement. The school administrator administers the school program in accordance with Virginia and Highland County School Board laws, policies, and administrative regulations. The school administrator supports division initiatives and responsibilities as assigned.

Salary will begin at $75,000.

Essential Duties

Provide an instructional program consistent with the goals and objectives of the school division, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and aligned with the Standards of Learning.

Provide the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership, including frequent classroom visitations.

Work with the school staff, families, and the community to maintain a positive atmosphere conducive to learning and appropriate student behavior.

Utilize available supervisory personnel to ensure an effective instructional program.

Supervise and evaluate instructional and support personnel, establishing individual programs for improvement consistent with the division’s staff development program.

Advise the superintendent of staff needs, and participate in the recruitment, employment, assignment, evaluation, promotion, transfer, non-renewal, and dismissal of certificated and classified personnel.

Establishes and supports a guidance program that meets the needs of all students.

Organize and supervise matters related to student registration, scheduling, orientation, and the development of the master schedule.

Foster effective home-school communication by providing opportunities for parents/guardians and teachers to discuss student progress and other matters of mutual concern, and by encouraging community involvement in school activities.

Meets with parents to discuss and proactively address concerns.

Supervise and evaluate all student activities and ensure appropriate student discipline at all school sponsored events.

Supervises and implements specialized education programs offered at the school.

Foster effective school-community relations by working with advisory groups and social service agencies as established by division policy.

Promote good working relationships among staff members.

Devise and administer a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division instructional and administrative goals; supervise the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.

Exercise leadership in the development, implementation, and interpretation of division and school policies and regulations.

Maintain proper utilization, care and attractiveness of buildings and grounds.

Become involved in professional enrichment to the extent necessary to keep abreast of developments in curriculum, Virgnia education, and in the field of education generally.

Engage school staff members in collaborative decision-making and school improvement efforts.

Employs various processes for gathering, analyzing, and using data to support instruction and school improvement.

Other Duties

Support the division’s efforts with state and federal grants and reporting.

Participates in various student and family activities that occur during the school year, including open house, student clubs, and after-school activities.

Perform any other specific and reasonable duties as shall be requested by the superintendent and the school board.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Be eligible for, or in possession of, a Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration.

Possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Demonstrate leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, families, school personnel, and the community.

Possess the ability to solve problems in a positive and productive manner.

Demonstrate an ability to analyze and interpret data to support student achievement and school improvement.
