Now, we’re looking for someone like YOU to help us continue this vital work.Your Role: this position will be at the forefront of our operations, responsible for operating a range of mini to medium-sized equipment, including tandem-axle dump trucks, single-axle dump trucks, snowplows, backhoes, road rollers, skid-steer loaders, and compressed air tools, in all aspects of stormwater infrastructure construction and maintenance, such as scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transportation, and excavations. Also conducting daily inspections, routine preventative maintenance on equipment, and performing various manual labor tasks, such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, asphalt leveling and raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and other physically demanding work. You will also ensure that appropriate safety procedures are followed. Position reports under the Maintenance and Operations Branch of Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division at 10635 West Drive Fairfax Va. 22030.Note: This position is required to be available 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Motor Equipment Operator position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.Employment StandardsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and, two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.
A Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
Must obtain CDL Class "A" designation within three months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of work experience operating mini to medium sized equipment.
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation.
Ability to operate a skid-steer
Ability to operate a backhoe and carry grade
Experienced in snow plowing operations using a dump truck, skid-steer, or a backhoe.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to push, pull, lift, bend, stoop, walk, climb in and out of catch basins and manholes, including removal and replacement of manhole covers which weight up to 90 lbs. with assistance. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, gloves, and personal fall arrest harness. Must be physically capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Must operate equipment, tools, and machinery in a safe manner and according to manufacturer's specifications with or without reasonable accommodations. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.SELECTION PROCEDURE:Panel interview and may include exercise.BONUS ELIGIBILITY:Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
