A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, or patient care and education. A PolysomnographicTechnologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff.
Prepare for the arrival of the patient by setting up and preparing the equipment for the ordered test.

Interview the patient to determine sleep disorder issues and to explain testing procedures.

Performs testing and any additional testing required for a sleep disorder that is noted.

Scores, interprets and reports results of sleep studies.
Educates patients about test results, sleep disorders, community support groups, and available resources.

Prepares, calibrates, repairs, and maintains equipment required for testing.
Determines and reports needed repairs and replacements.

Maintains proper supplies to care for patients.
Minimum Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of a program in Polysomnography required (or equivalent experience as a Polysomnographic Technician).

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association required.
Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent required.
Registered Sleep Technologist (RPSGT) required.
Effective January 2016 All technologists must be licensed with the VA Board of Medicine in Polysomnography
