DescriptionDLBA Naval Architects, a division of Gibbs & Cox, is seeking a candidate with a well-rounded balance of practical naval architecture experience, experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) skills. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide naval architecture support in the development of steel, aluminum, and composite (a) recreational vessels, (b) commercial ship designs, and (c) U.S. Government craft from 20’ to 250’ feet in length. The ideal candidate is an experienced Naval Architect with extensive design experience and in-depth knowledge of the design process.Location: We prefer to have this person work onsite in our Chesapeake Office. However, we may consider fully remote for the right candidate.Primary ResponsibilitiesEssential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Serve as a technical leader in a multi-disciplinary engineering design team.

Lead and guide staff in the development of accurate and detailed engineering calculations using first principles hand calculations and devising approaches to challenges encountered.

Lead and guide staff in the design of boats and craft and providing solutions by applying existing design skills, techniques, and company procedures.

Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for design and modification of boats and craft.

Develop and implement new approaches to design and engineering problems when existing standards and procedures are determining insufficient for the task at hand.

Execute engineering tasking as assigned by leadership personnel accurately and efficiently.

Interface with existing and potential clients regularly to convey technical information clearly and accurately.

Write proposals and develop technical content for commercial and government opportunities.

Basic Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship is required and candidates must be able to obtain a security clearance

M.S. Degree or higher in Naval Architecture

5-10 Years of related experience with small craft design

Requires a broad knowledge of naval architecture and an in-depth knowledge of principles, practices and related technologies

Strong knowledge of specifications and regulatory requirements (BS/RINA/LR/ISO/USCG/ABYC)

Knowledge and experience with developing calculations and drawings for Class and Flag review and approval.

Strong analytical experience and problem solving skills

Proficiency in using industry-standard CAD software, including AutoCAD and Rhino

Advanced-level CFD skills within the domain of naval architectural analysis.

Expert-level experimental hydrodynamics knowledge, with experience planning and executing tow tank testing

In depth knowledge of instrumentation setup, model setup, and experimental data analysis for calmwater tests, seakeeping tests and seaplane tests

Experience with GHS hydrostatics and stability software

Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

Demonstrated interpersonal skills as a member of a collaborative multidisciplinary team

Strong time management and organization skills as an independent contributor and small team leader.

Desired Qualifications:

M.Sc. Degree or Ph.D Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field

Professional Engineer’s License
