As part of MITRE’s Naval Division, the Naval Expeditionary Department (N234) supports a wide range of Navy and Marine Corps projects ranging from advanced communications to autonomous systems in support of expeditionary Naval warfighters. The Department provides systems engineering, operational, and technical expertise to inform Marine Corps warfighting and business enterprise decision-making. Our mission is to enable the achievement of the Commandant’s Force Design 2030 objectives so that the Marine Corps can compete in the present and prevail in any future fight. Expeditionary works across the service addressing mission outcomes including wargaming, C5ISRT, contested logistics, integrated fires, cybersecurity, enterprise transformation, and infrastructure resilience across the operating and supporting establishments as well as Headquarters, United States Marine Corps (HQMC.)The Department operates six labs and project studios at the Quantico site that bring our deep technical expertise to bear against our sponsor’s toughest fires, C4I, and enterprise transformation challenges. The recent expansion of the Quantico site will increase collaboration with our sponsors and allow Expeditionary to adopt more rapid, agile, and evolutionary approaches to defining and solving the Marine Corps’ most impactful challenges.Work TypeEnjoy a balanced work-life with our 80% hybrid on-site schedule.Job Description: The Naval Expeditionary Department is seeking an Intermediate Autonomous Systems Engineer to directly contribute to supporting the Navy and Marine Corps develop the next generation of autonomous capabilities. As part of an innovative team researching, developing, and integrating state of the art capabilities, including control systems, artificial intelligence, mission autonomy, and advanced sensing, this team member will be directly developing systems that enhance future operational capabilities on the land, at sea, and in the air.The right candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, technically focused team, bringing their knowledge to bear to work on real world autonomy challenges. In this role, the following is expected:

Work in a team setting to develop, evaluate, and implement autonomous systems capabilities

Maintain knowledge of autonomous systems and robotics to include artificial intelligence, sensing, mechanical, and control systems

Fabricate, assemble, and integrate subsystems to provide autonomous capabilities; to include networking and physically connecting these systems

Develop and propose new approaches to technical problems involving autonomous systems

Basic Qualifications:

Typically a Bachelor of Science or higher in computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience or a Masters degree with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

2+ years relevant experience working in the fields of robotics and autonomous systems

Experience in coding and using programming language, especially Python, C, Java, and/or with Robot Operating System

Experience working with microprocessors and electrical systems

Ability to work independently

Ability and experience working collaboratively, in a team environment

Demonstrates excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills

Must be a US Citizen Eligible with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Science in artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechanical engineering

Experience with ArduPilot, Betaflight, or PX4

Experience developing and fabricating hardware prototypes

Experience working on ground, airborne, or maritime electronic systems

A current and active DoD Secret clearance, with eligibility for Top Secret
