Find your place in finance on #TeamAmex.The U.S. Banking Controllership team within American Express is responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting activities primarily for American Express National Bank (“AENB”) – an entity which comprises a significant portion of the American Express business. Broadly, the Controllership team ensures the integrity of the Bank’s financial results in accordance with U.S. GAAP, provides an effective control environment over financial reporting, works to eliminate controllable financial risk, and supports growth in the business while balancing control and compliance. We work extensively with other Controllership colleagues and subject matter experts, U.S. Banking team and leaders, finance & business partners and the General Counsel’s Office. The team is committed to excellence, talent development, encouraging work/life balance, and timely recognition of team members.How will you make an impact in this role?The Director, Treasury & CRA Accounting role within U.S. Banking Controllership will report directly to the Vice President, Controller AENB. This individual will be responsible for leading a team of professionals administering to the treasury and CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) investment accounting activities of the Bank. The team ensures the accuracy and integrity of the Bank’s accounting and reporting processes related to the Bank’s cash, deposits, debt, investments, and intercompany positions. The position will also continue to enhance and build out accounting processes in support of the Bank’s growing investment in affordable housing projects required by the Community Reinvestment Act.Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Serving as a subject matter expert and owner of American Express Company’s Deposit accounting and SEC Reporting
Direct and coordinate subledger management and controls for the Bank’s debt, intercompany loans and third-party deposit products
Manage the Bank’s main operating cash accounts and settlements
Work with the CRA team to structure new investment contracts, establish accounting on new investment, and manage monthly accounting for CRA loans and investment
Support the development of strong working relationships and communications with key business partners and senior leaders
Support/lead special projects to drive process enhancements and automation initiatives
Drive employee engagement, provide career development opportunities, and support work/life balance initiatives for Controllership team members
Minimum Requirements:
7 years experience in Accounting / Auditing / Financial Reporting
Strong Understanding of Regulatory, U.S. GAAP, and SEC reporting and accounting guidelines
A self-starter, proactive team player with a passion to consistently deliver high quality service and exceed customers’ expectations
Ability to lead, coach, develop and promote talent
Ability to understand a Company’s businesses, processes, and unique financial reporting systems and operations
Ability to manage multiple priorities, drive projects, improve processes, and work well under time-pressure deadlines
Ability to effectively interact with all levels and stakeholders of an organization including senior leaders/officers, Board members, as well as external regulators and auditors
Ability to influence decisions and manage expectations with business partners
A quick learner with superior problem-solving skills. Focus on generating efficiencies and continuous process improvement
Demonstrate willingness to take initiative and act decisively
Strong written and verbal communication, relationship building, presentation and collaboration skills
Education Requirements:
Undergraduate degree in Accounting
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters of Accounting or MBA and/or CPA
Project management experience
Experience working in public accounting and/or financial services
QualificationsSalary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefitsThe above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition.
