Occasional overtime is required.VP Area Academic AffairsDepartment 00018 - Utah Museum of Natl Hist OperLocation CampusCity Salt Lake City, UTType of Recruitment External PostingPay Rate Range 17.00-21.00Close DateOpen Until Filled YesJob SummaryThe Exhibits Preparator:1) Assists in the planning, preparation, design, fabrication, and installation of temporary, permanent and traveling museum exhibitions.2) Participates in the prototyping process, by designing and fabricating exhibits, testing them with visitors, and making necessary changes to improve the visitor experience.3) Performs maintenance of exhibits, procures materials, and maintains shop cleanliness and safety.4) Coordinates the care for live animal exhibits throughout the museum.We are looking for candidates that have 3-5 years of experience in exhibit preparation including carpentry, mountmaking, metal work, painting, lighting, and exhibit fabrication. Candidates should demonstrate working knowledge of display techniques and specifications including understanding of various materials used in fabricating displays. Effective communication skills are required to collaborate with team members, interpret instructions, and present exhibit preparation information.Responsibilities1. Designs, constructs, and installs temporary, permanent and traveling exhibitions.2. Contributes to the exhibit development process, by communicating and collaborating with others, attending meetings, and presenting ideas.3. Participates in the prototyping process, by designing and fabricating exhibits, testing them with visitors, and making necessary changes to improve the visitor experience.4. Balances multiple projects, multitasks, and adapts process to finish tasks in a timely manner.5. Collaborates and manage outside vendors and independent contractors when necessary.6. Maintains shop and tool safety and cleanliness.7. Procures building materials and maintenance supplies for exhibits.8. Coordinates traveling exhibits; ensures proper storage and moving techniques are used.9. Improvise when resources such as funding, time and physical space are limited.10. Acquire new job skills through museum funded professional development opportunities.Minimum QualificationsSuccessful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry, or four years of professional carpentry experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a commitment to provide excellent customer service; and effective communication skills required. A valid Utah driver’s license may be required for some positions.PreferencesFive years of experience in exhibit preparation, carpentry and fabrication or equivalency required. Working knowledge of display techniques and specifications including understanding of various materials used in fabricating displays; ability to secure and pack materials for shipping. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required to collaborate with team members, interpret instructions, and present exhibit preparation information. This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
