This Academic Advisor I position will focus on International Studies in the College of Humanities.The International Studies Program uses the wide-ranging resources at the University of Utah to prepare students to live and work in the increasingly global world of the 21st century. Established in 2003, the major has rapidly become one of the most popular undergraduate programs at the University. The interdisciplinary methods, language study, and direct international experience make it a versatile and highly flexible major—either alone or in combination with other programs of study. Students are encouraged to pursue an additional major or minor, especially in a foreign language. Linguistic and cultural competence, acquired through language study, is essential to the International Studies major.With direct supervision, this position advises a diverse population of students regarding their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. Interprets and explains university academic policy and procedure to assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to degree completion.This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect and equity that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel safe, valued, welcomed, and respects all students in their quest for individual success through degree programs, certificates, etc.The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in communication, time management, and problem solving. Meets with undergraduate students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, and course planning and registration.
Facilitates students’ academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, tutoring, career decisions, mental health, or other needs.
Disseminates information to students, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
Actively participates in campus-based professional development communities, including but not limited to UAAC , or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in academic advising.
Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms (e.g., EAB ) to monitor student progress. Participates in proactive advising and intervention strategies for assigned student populations.
Proficient in degree tracking software, record keeping systems, and advising-related technologies
Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of advising activity, referrals, exceptions made, transfer courses, etc. Actively engages with EAB .
Participates in advising and related activities during New Student Orientation each semester.
Attends monthly staff meetings and trainings related to advising.
Supports the Student Success Hub in appropriate outreach events and activities as assigned.
Provides other advising-related activities as needed and assigned.
