Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of our construction company. The Controller will be responsible for financial reporting, work-in-progress (WIP) accounting, percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition, balance sheet management, reconciliations, and compliance with GAAP and industry regulations. This role is essential in maintaining financial accuracy, optimizing financial processes, and supporting strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP.
Percentage of Completion Accounting: Manage revenue recognition using the percentage-of-completion method, ensuring accurate tracking of job costs,
billings, and profitability.
Work-in-Progress (WIP) Management: Maintain and analyze WIP schedules, tracking job performance and ensuring timely revenue recognition.
Balance Sheet & Reconciliations: Oversee monthly reconciliations for bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and job cost ledgers to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Job Cost Accounting: Monitor project costs, review variances, and collaborate with project managers to maintain budget integrity.
Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow, forecast funding needs, and ensure the company maintains a strong liquidity position.
Internal Controls & Compliance: Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.
Audit & Tax Preparation: Assist in the preparation of financial documents for external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.
Process Improvement: Continuously improve financial processes, accounting systems, and reporting tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Team Leadership: Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance management.
Qualifications & Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, MPA, or CMA a plus).
5+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry
Strong knowledge of percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP schedules, and construction job costing.
Experience with balance sheet management, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
Proficiency in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Foundation, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
In-depth understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
