Warehouse Forklift Operator/Order Picker Job Description

A Forklift Operator, or Material Handler, is an individual who moves stock around a warehouse using a forklift or other types of loading devices. Their main duties include operating forklifts, winches, and other devices, loading and unloading equipment, and storing or relocating materials within the warehouse or factory. An Order Picker, or Picker Packer, is responsible for reading incoming orders and selecting the correct items from the warehouse shelves before staging them for delivery. Their duties include operating forklifts and other heavy machinery, updating inventory counts and counting out the appropriate number of goods to fulfill and order.

Forklift Operator Duties and Responsibilities

A Forklift Operator has many duties and responsibilities that are essential to maximizing the factory or warehouse workflow. Here are some of the common duties and responsibilities that a Forklift Operator should be able to perform:

Load, unload, pack, and unpack materials.

Label and sort incoming and outgoing shipments.

Relocate items within the warehouse or factory.

Operate a forklift, winch, or other machinery used for transporting or shipping materials.

Track inventory of incoming and outgoing items.

Carefully manage and dispose of hazardous waste materials whenever necessary.

Order Picker Duties and Responsibilities

Collecting order notes to fulfill deliveries

Picking out ordered items from storage shelves or rooms using barcodes, serial numbers, etc.

Securely shrink-wrapping items before placing them in envelopes or boxes.

Operating equipment according to industrial safety regulations.

Loading delivery vehicles

Updating stock inventory after each item is retrieved.

Managing stock control, including item replenishment and storage

What does a Forklift Operator do?

The Forklift Operator oversees loading and unloading materials, both incoming and outgoing of the facility. They are responsible for maintaining the workflow in the factory or warehouse by preparing orders for shipment, storing materials, assisting in taking inventory, and operating the machinery required to safely manage and transport items. They may also be required to operate machinery to transport materials between factories, transportation vehicles, or shipping and loading docks.

What Does an Order Picker Do?

Order Pickers work in warehouse environments to facilitate the process of sending out inventory in storage to customers or storefronts. Their role is to get items quickly and efficiently from their place on the shelves to a truck or shipping container. Order Pickers have an in-depth understanding of a warehouse’s layout so they can easily navigate to the correct aisle and find the type of inventory they need. The Order Picker performs basic quality assurance by inspecting goods and their containers for damage before packing them to be shipped. Pickers also maintain the machines they use and perform repairs.

What are the qualities of a good Order Picker?

Good Order Pickers are focused and motivated when filling orders. They enjoy staying busy and always look for ways they can help others if they are not actively filling an order themselves. Successful Order Pickers need to have the physical strength and stamina to move around heavy merchandise and travel back and forth across a large warehouse to fill incoming orders without getting tired. A good Order Picker can stay alert on the job even when doing repetitive tasks and always pays attention to safety protocols, especially when operating a forklift or other equipment.

What are the daily duties of an Order Picker?

Order Pickers can work long shifts at a warehouse or distribution center to fill orders at any time of day. At the start of their shift, Order Pickers begin receiving tickets that describe the type and quantity of the items they need to gather. They use inventory management software to track down the correct items and make notes if any of the listed goods is currently out of stock. When filling large orders, Order Pickers stack pallets onto forklifts and arrange the goods for easy access. They bring the completed order to the loading dock and secure them for delivery.

Forklift Operator Skills and Qualifications

There are several skills and qualifications that make for an excellent Forklift Operator candidate. Here are some of the common skills and expertise to look out for in a candidate:

Excellent communication skills.

Good digital processing skills for inventory tracking.

Strong organization and time management skills.

Excellent critical thinking skills.

Ability to work well under pressure.

Attention to detail.

Must be a Collaborator and is willing to assist the Warehouse if needed.

Must be able to work in a warehouse environment that may be hot during the summer or cold during the winter, depending on the season.

Forklift Operator Experience Requirements

A successful candidate does not necessarily need previous experience as a Forklift Operator, but they should have experience working in a factory or a warehouse setting. A successful candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of how the day-to-day operations in these facilities take place and how they could apply their skills and techniques in a new setting to improve the efficiency and workflow of the company.

Forklift Operator Education and Training Requirements

A good Forklift Operator will have a valid driver’s license, and the physical ability to lift and carry heavy materials as needed. In addition, they must have a license to operate a Forklift and other heavy machinery needed for the job. Forklift Operators are required to have specific training from the governing bodies of their province to be eligible for the position.

Must be a US Citizen.

Must have a valid, (not expired Forklift Certificate).

Must have a Resume, no exceptions.

Must be Forklift Certified with at least 1-2 years’ experience, no exceptions and must be certified. If you have no experience, please do not apply. “I am an adaptive person will not qualify for this position). Warehouse Manager will have you evaluate drive at the interview session.

Must have a neat and clean appearance.

Must be able to communicate and speak efficiently and clearly.

Must be a Collaborator, responsible, efficient, and honest.

Must be able to work in a face paced environment yet pay diligence.

Must have reliable transportation as the Metro Transportation is not an option, you must have reliable transportation to get to your place of employment, no exceptions.

Must be 18 years.

Bilingual a Plus.

Candidates must possess the physical ability to meet the demands of this position, including:

- The ability to repeatedly lift items weighing up to one hundred pounds.

- Excellent upper body strength.

- The stamina to work in environments with extreme heat.

- Physical endurance is suitable for warehouse conditions.
