SUMMARYThe primary purpose of the Research Investigator applies knowledge, technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, and carry out research projects in the department of Genetics. This position impacts cancer research projects by developing/maintaining programs and applications tailored to meet research objectives and makes them available to the wider cancer research community. This position impacts cancer research efforts throughout the institution.KEY FUNCTIONSResearch Expertise and Specialization· Plans, designs and initiates research experiments and protocols in a (semi-)independent manner.· Collects, analyzes and evaluates the research data using appropriate software applications after completing experiments.· Follows lab protocols and maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental data and procedures.· Apply molecular biology skills to perform and supervise Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) sample and library intake and QC. Maintain detailed and well-organized records of protocols performed and results obtained. Compiles, writes and submits project results to Principal Investigator.· Evaluates and troubleshoots experiments and QC data and improves research methods.· Generates and distributes QC reports after evaluation and troubleshooting.· Willing to learn and establish new techniques that are required for lab research.· Organizes data and assists in writing of scientific papers for publication, grant applications and presentations at scientific meetings.· Performs general bioinformatics analysis and provides software support for projects.· Transforms and distributes data in user-friendly formats.· Summarizes computational analyses as written and graphical reports and make preliminary interpretations of the results.· Identifies and deploys relevant bioinformatic algorithms and software pipelines.· Supervises the use of laboratory equipment and implements safety procedures.· Trains assigned lab staff in research protocol and technique.· Alert supervisor to problems/concerns.· Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills are essential.Other duties as assigned.EDUCATIONRequired: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.Preferred: Master's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.EXPERIENCERequired: Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
