An equivalent combination of education and experience relevant to the role may be considered for this position.Job Summary:Provides professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of environmental, health, and safety programs in compliance with regulatory agencies, national guidelines, and institutional policies.This EHS Specialist will play a key role in developing, implementing, and managing EHS policies, procedures, and programs across several of UTMB Health’s campuses to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our patients, visitors and employees.Position Overview:The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) provides world class healthcare, research, and academics. The Environmental Health and Safety Department is seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist in the Radiation & Occupational Safety group. This position is a full-time, permanent position that is relied on to organize and help lead the group in technical matters of compliance with potable water quality and laboratory safety.The desired candidate will have mid-level safety experience in an academic healthcare environment, with specific experience in laboratory safety, potable water quality, or both. The position will perform bi-weekly chlorine and temperature monitoring across UTMB Health hospital campuses, monthly coliform sampling, monthly reporting to Water Quality Management Team, and be responsible for periodic reviews and updates of the UTMB Water Quality Management Plan. The position may be expected to respond to emergent water quality issues and provide guidance/recommendations to our facilities staff. This position will also directly support our laboratory safety program by performing laboratory safety audits, risk assessments, and supporting safety equipment inspection and testing.This position will be a key team member to the 11-person Radiation & Occupational Safety group of the Environmental Health and Safety department.Job Duties:This position will be responsible for potable water quality and laboratory safety, with support provided to industrial safety activities.

Provides support for work process leader and team.

Provides customer service interactions for execution of programmatic deliverables.

Produces required reports to leadership and assigned committees.

Performs audits and inspections and provides recommendations to help reduce institutional risks.

Reviews and monitors safety process.

Develops and teaches environmental, health, and safety training courses.

Assists with regulatory inspections.

Performs customer consultations to identify and address environmental, health, and safety needs.

Establishes appropriate work procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and UTMB policies.

Respond to hazardous materials releases and other emergent conditions within scope of training and experience.

Maintains consistent quality of institutional safety procedures.

Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Performs related duties as required.

Preferred Education/Experience:Bachelor’s degree in an environmental, natural, or applied science, or related field, and 3 years of related experience.Preferred Certifications or Licenses:One or more of the following, or other recognized EHS recognized professional certification.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

Registered Environmental Manager (REM)

Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Working Environment/ Equipment:

Travel between Galveston, Angleton, League City, and Webster campuses and outpatient clinics is required.

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.

Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and/or materials. May involve strenuous activity such as walking, lifting, and moving of material. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection, chemical resistant clothing, etc.

Standard office equipment and equipment used to ensure safe environmental levels.

May be required to pass the "Basic Radiation Safety in the Laboratory" course within the first 6 months of employment.

May be required to achieve or maintain 24- or 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations certification according to 29 CFR 1910 requirements within first 6 months of hire.

Ability to drive UTMB vehicles.

Salary Range:Actual salary commensurate with experience.Other:Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
