Surface Preparation is a critical process at our facility because surface contaminants
and improper activation can lead to poor plating quality. Successful surface prep technicians exhibit
relevant knowledge, attention to detail, proactive energy, and sound judgment. Entry-level
technicians show curiosity and an ability to quickly climb the learning curve, and they take on
increasing levels of responsibility as they grow in their knowledge and experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibility of the Surface Prep Technicians is to assist in all tasks
involved in cleaning operations; these tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Preparing the surface preparation area for daily operations:
a. Obtaining, making accessible and verifying the proper working condition of all necessary surface
preparation equipment and supplies
b. Checking and adjusting the cleaning solutions to ensure they are at proper temperature
c. Ensuring all safety equipment is clean and in proper working condition
2. Loading the racks for production
3. Preparing each load for cleaning
4. Cleaning each load for production in accordance with this companys p
rocedures and Work Instructions
5. Ensuring all equipment is stocked and in proper working order, including hoses, brushes, air drills, etc.
6. Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area
7. Cleaning out and refilling the acid activation tank, alkaline cleaner tanks, brass activator rinse (as
necessary)
8. Assisting platers in removing finished parts from the racks after plating when needed
9. Assisting in stripping parts requiring re-work (as identified by the Final Inspection Department)
10. Maintaining constant communication with Surface Prep Department Lead, co-workers, and Production
Supervisors regarding surface preparation operations, progress toward goals, spills, repairs and
maintenance needs, material shortages or when quality of work does not meet expectations.
11. Report any safety issues (to include accidents, near misses, spills and any behavior of co-workers that may
result in injury or destruction of company property) to the Safety Manager
12. Any other duties assigned by the Surface Prep Technician – Lead. Production Supervisor or Operations
Manager.
Job Requirements
1. Must be able to read and write English
2. Must be able to work in non-climate control environment during both cold and hot seasons.
3. Must be capable of: (100-400 times per shift)
a. Lifting and carrying of parts (with a partner) that may weigh as much as 150 lbs. (average parts
weigh 40-60 lbs.)
b. Stooping, climbing, or crouching with some frequency
c. Repetitive movements (grasping, pushing, and pulling)
d. Working independently
4. Must be able to be on your feet all day (standing or walking)
5. Must be able to read and understand hazardous labels on chemical containers
6. Must be able to operate a forklift and overhead hoist/crane
7. Reliable attendance and punctuality are a must
8. Ability to work in a team
9. Must have full knowledge of safety rules and procedures and be capable of instructing other employees
10. Ability to work overtime, as needed (up to 10 hour shifts with little notice to complete production)
11. Visual inspection of parts for small defects
