PRIMARY PURPOSEProvides communication and clerical support to patients and clinical staff and performs specified patient care activities under the direction of the assigned clinical supervisor to facilitate the effective operation of outpatient clinics, and ensure that Parkland¿s financial viability is secured at the most basic level. MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONSEducation- Must have completed training through an accredited Medical Assistant training program.- Must have a High School diploma or GED. Experience- Must have three years of front physician office experience. Equivalent Education and/or Experience- None Certification/Registration/Licensure- Medical Assistant Certification preferred. - Must have a current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire and/or placement in job. from one of the following:- American Heart Association- American Red Cross- Military Training Network. Skills or Special Abilities- Must be familiar with diagnostic ICD-9-CM coding and HCPCS-CPT-4 procedure codes.- Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of personal computers, medical software, and other standard office equipment.- Must be able to demonstrate basic patient skills and skill in the use of supplies and assigned equipment.- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and Parkland staff. Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.- Must demonstrate a positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and be professional in both appearance and approach.- Must be detail oriented, possess basic mathematical skills, and have sharp analytical skills to resolve registration issues as they relates to multiple groups including third party payors, physicians, patients and Parkland.- Must be able to handle potentially stressful situations and multiple tasks simultaneously.- Must be able to solve problems within the guidelines of established policies and procedures.- Bilingual skills preferred.- Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred. Responsibilities1. Performs specified patient care activities which may include administering immunizations and PPD¿s, drawing blood, performing lab procedures and collection of specimens, performing diagnostic tests, and taking vital signs, in accordance with the provision of patient centered/patient valued care, while providing optimal care services to patients and their families as appropriate. 2. Completes appropriate written and computer documentation and maintains accurate and timely entries and notations in the medical records that meet the standards, goals, and objectives of the assigned department and Parkland. 3. Confirms appointment date and time, verifies and/or obtains demographic information and insurance identification to ensure patient information is documented in a timely manner. Reviews and updates patient accounts to ensure Parkland has accurate and current information to process claims and obtain payment. May rotate into other business staff positions including appointment scheduling, check-in/check-out, posting charges/payments, medical record and referral management. 4. Identifies and refers non-funded patients to a Financial Counselor. May be responsible for informing patients of their financial responsibility and collects unpaid co-payments or balances. May be responsible for entering patient charges and payments into the computer system to document financial transactions and complete accounting of patient revenues. May be responsible for balancing cash drawer at the end of the day.Job Accountabilities 1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
