Position Information Posting Number 20113019 Position Title Staff Interpreter FTE 1.0 Position Type Staff Department Accessibility Resource Center Position Summary Information Job Summary/Basic Function About This Role: This position provides communication access services for Deaf/hard of hearing students and others attending academic courses or events at Lamar University by interpreting/transliterating spoken language using American Sign Language or other manual sign systems and vice versa, facilitating communication between hearing andDeaf/hard of hearing individuals. Other duties may include assignment preparation, assisting with administrative duties, scheduling, mentoring Lamar DSDE interpreting students, and planning and presenting workshops for LU faculty/staff.What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:
Interpret lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, and LU-
sponsored events using a manual sign system appropriate for the language and thecultural background of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and staff.
Assignment preparation: Engage faculty and course resources to facilitate course
communication access.
Assist with administrative duties and scheduling, as needed.
Mentor interpreter students/interns.
Plan and/or participate in presentations and workshops for LU faculty/staff.

Physical Requirements:
Light physical requirements exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Job Conditions:
Work is performed primarily in a standard academic environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions. Daily mobility across campus in an outdoor environment is a requirement. Occasional events in non-traditional settings include sporting and stadium venues, virtual platforms, clinical practicum sites, and outdoor locations.

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature, which may be obtained with a two-year associate’s degree, diploma, or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.
Certification by the Texas Board of Evaluators of Interpreters or national equivalent (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or National Interpreter Certification) is required. Minimum of one year of professional experience working as an interpreter in education.
