Hello, I’ve built a space where independent and local journalists can publish their content and earn money from either single purchases or donations.
The traditional way of doing local journalism is a challenge to sustain, and this idea is to allow a low-cost method of publishing news on the web without intrusive ads or a subscription paywall that seems to be fatiguing consumers.
It’s not guaranteed income, and it would take work. I’m hoping for journalists willing to find local stories, research and promote them, and publish them on Journalocity.com. If your story earns money, either through donation or payment, the journalist will keep 90% of the revenue.
It’s a big ask, but I do believe there is potential. An idea that might work to generate revenue is local sporting events. If you wrote a story took loads of pictures of a little league game, offered the story and a picture for free, and put the majority of photos behind a paywall, parents and fans might pay for that.
I’m a one-person operation and this is an idea I had to try to see if I can make local journalism a little more profitable. I think journalism is a foundation to our way of life and we need ways to pay them so that they make our communities better. It may be a bad idea, or poorly executed, and I’d love your feedback either way. Respond to this post or find my email on the website and let me know your thoughts.
