Summary About the Position: This job announcement is for a Deckhand Leader, XG-5788-06, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District. Official Duty Station is the Motor Vessel Mississippi, position requires (non-TDY) travel with the Motor Vessel Mississippi, shift work, and mandatory overtime. Responsibilities Lead others in work involving the handling and fastening of lines to moor plant and make tows. Keep vessel's gear and rigging in good working order. Adhere to maintenance requirements and general upkeep for the deck machinery and equipment. Follow manufacturer's manuals for maintenance and assembly of equipment and tools. Assign deck assignments to other Deckhands with minimal instructions and supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Deckhand Leader without more than normal supervision. Applicants should document the ability to perform common duties of a Deckhand Leader to include; explaining and demonstrating deckhand tasks, enforcing safety and housekeeping rules and regulations, and distributing tools and materials associated with deckhand duties to workers. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Lead or Supervise Reliability and Dependability as a Deckhand Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical effort: Substantial physical effort is required in the handling of heavy cables, equipment and machinery. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside under all weather conditions. Subject to failing overboard and hazards attending moving plant. Subject to splashing and slippery decks. Uses hand tools characteristic of indicated duties. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required.
