The Peabody Children's Chorus is seeking applications for an Assistant Director to work with our tenor-bass ensemble, Cantus, beginning in September 2024.Since its establishment in 1990, the Children's Chorus has grown from 30 to over 350 singers in 11 rehearsing ensembles and 3 preparatory classes. Cantus was formed in 2021 and currently has 21 members.As well as touring in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, and Hawaii, the Chorus has performed with many local ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and Peabody Symphony Orchestra.The Peabody Children's Chorus values the highest artistic standards in all dimensions of our program, including choice of repertoire, tone of concerts, sound of ensembles, musicology, and performance practice; we believe in a philosophy of education that fosters self-growth and discipline through the pursuit of excellence, beauty, and concrete musical skills.We are searching for a teacher who will nurture each chorister's potential for artistic and personal excellence, and who will foster a love of music through skill-based learning.About usEstablished in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory boasts a rich history of nurturing musical talent. With approximately 2,500 students passing through its doors every week, the school is Maryland's premier community school for music and dance.The Peabody Preparatory welcomes students of all ages and levels of ability, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can discover and develop their musical potential. Offerings range from early childhood classes that spark a lifelong love of music and dance, to programs designed for adults and professional dancers and musicians seeking to hone their skills.Located in downtown Baltimore and sharing space with the renowned Peabody Conservatory, the Preparatory also extends its reach through four satellite campuses in the communities of Towson, Annapolis, Frederick, and Howard County, MD.Artistic & Teaching Responsibilities Under the leadership of and in collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director will:

hold two weekly rehearsals, 1.5 hours each (Tuesday in Towson; Thursday in Columbia)

help to plan, implement and evaluate the artistic year and educational program for the Cantus ensemble

collaborate artistically & develop relationships with other community and professional musical organizations

Administrative Responsibilities The Assistant Director will work with Chorus faculty and staff to:

plan and implement end-of-semester concerts and external performances

assist with recruitment, evaluations, and auditions for new and continuing students

track student progress and assist with annual placement decisions and progress reports; write recommendations for students upon request

participate in orientations for new students and their parents

Education requirements Bachelor's degree in music from an accredited institution Specific Qualifications

minimum of three years' experience teaching and/or conducting; piano proficiency is desirable

experience teaching middle and/or high-school age singers

knowledge of vocal pedagogy, including moveable-do solfège; an understanding of the changing voice

strong communication and organizational skills
