Thank you for considering a career at Roper St. Francis Healthcare!Scheduled Weekly Hours:0.01Work Shift:Days/Evenings (United States of America)Location: Roper Hospital - Charleston, SCShift: As needed days and evenings.Primary Function/General Purpose of PositionUnder the direction of a licensed Respiratory professional, the Student Respiratory Therapist will provide evaluation of and care for patients with respiratory insufficiencies consist with student scope of practice for the Respiratory Department for the adult and geriatric population. The student must frequently communicate with all the therapists. Routine duties will include but are not limited to administering sage and competent respiratory care as ordered by the physician, organization of equipment, stocking, assist with delivering and replacing oxygen cylinders when indicated, and transportation of patients. The student follows all RSFH Departmental Policies and Procedures and performs tasks only after successful passing of theoretical and practical competencies, administered by RSFH Departmental leadership and or staff.Essential Job Functions

​ Administer medication and treatments based on patient outcomes, under appropriate supervision. Aerosolized therapy uses small volume nebulizers, metered dose inhalers, dry powdered inhalers, breath-actuated nebulizer, and vibrating mesh nebulizer.

Airway Clearance and Lung Expansion Therapy (i.e., Vest, OPEP, PEP, and CPT).

Arterial blood gas sampling.

Baseline pulmonary function testing.

Cleaning and preparing equipment.

Deliver and assess patient response to ordered therapy all with proper documentation.

Intra-hospital transport.

Nocturnal oximetry recording and downloading.

Provide patients with education for diseases, medications, and treatment.

Supplemental oxygen therapy.

Tracheostomy care and sterile suctioning.

Performs a hands-on competency to confirm skill set.

Maintains that competency to perform procedures and testing specific to RCP Student Extern.

Assures accurate departmental patient activity, charting and charge records.

Education

High School Graduate or GED. Currently enrolled in a CoArc accredited 2-year respiratory program who anticipates graduation within one year of completion of the Respiratory Care Student Extern, GPA equal to 3.0 or above, and has completed Cardiopulmonary Science I, Advanced Respiratory Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Mechanical Ventilation II, or equivalent prior to the start of Student Respiratory Therapy.
