JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:The Smeal College of Business seeks an experienced Academic Adviser to work in a fast-paced, high energy academic environment. Extensive knowledge of university policy and procedures that apply to the matriculation and the academic, personal, and professional development of undergraduate students is required. The responsibilities of this individual include:

Organize, plan and deliver all aspects of the Smeal Colleges portion of New Student Orientation program.

Represent Smeal on a university-wide New Student Orientation committee that includes representatives from every college, as well as the Student Orientation and Transition Programs (SOTP) department.

Collaborate with SOTP and advisers from each college to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of NSO programming and adjust as needed to improve the overall program continually.

Develop NSO programming and content specific to Smeal students. Create a schedule, workload allocation, and guidelines for Smeal adviser participation. Manage adviser activities on NSO days.

Hire, train and manage a team of student employees during New Student Orientation.

Troubleshoot and resolve issues during New Student Orientation ranging from student account problems to parental concerns to overall university procedures

This position will also provide ongoing academic advising to an assigned roster of undergraduate students. The adviser will guide students in course selection and scheduling; resolve academic problems; monitor degree progress.

Assess other student needs and make professional referrals.

Serve as a resource for academic advisers and students.

Interpret university policies, procedures and curriculum to students and faculty in the college

Contribute to advising committees and/or working groups related to areas that may include student success, diversity and inclusion, assessment and evaluation, academic policies and/or staff development.

Other duties include meeting with prospective students and families and participating in various college programs such as New Student Orientation, Accepted Student Programs, Spend A Summer Day and other programs as assigned. This position requires interaction with students, parents, faculty, and various college staff members and may require occasional weekend and evening hours.This position requires a master’s degree or higher plus six years of work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic advising with a proven track record and commitment to serving diverse student populations. Competencies critical to success include excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong attention to detail; commitment to honor and integrity; sensitivity to the needs of others; ability to work independently and as part of a team; effective knowledge of computer applications, and efficiently manage time, balance multiple responsibilities, and adapt to change.
