Community Engagement Specialist

Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 19113 Philadelphia USA

Vacancy caducado!

The ideal candidate for Community Engagement Specialist will have experience working in under-served neighborhoods to recruit and organize volunteers in these communities. The Specialist will work as an independent contractor reporting to the organizing director and executive committee.

The Specialist will be tasked with building a series of self-sustaining neighborhood activist groups that can be counted upon to regularly participate in the affairs of government and community. Our target demographic lives in struggling neighborhoods in North and NW Philly that contain chronically low-engagement voters and are often last to receive resources.

Our goal is to build trust within these communities that can be measured by increased community activism, increased voter registration and voter turnout by November 2024.

This work will include:

Identify, recruit, and assist in training trusted voices in targeted communities through deep canvassing and in conversations with neighbors and community organizations.

Build these community groups by using one-on-one and small meetings with stakeholders and community leaders to understand the specific needs, concerns, and challenges of the community.

Work collaboratively with the PNN organizing director to create a strategic plan for engaging the community with SMART goals and clear deliverables and timelines. Integrate special projects and initiatives of PNN and partners into the neighborhood strategic plans.

Organize community forums, town hall meetings, and small group discussions to encourage active participation and dialogue.

Organize canvassing and phone-banking teams to achieve outreach goals.

Other duties as assigned.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Planning: Demonstrated ability to think through goals, strategies and tactics. Preference will be given to someone who is skilled in planning a campaign, including timeline and benchmarks; ability to determine the logistics required to hold an action or event; strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, thorough in completing tasks, and persistent in pursuit of goals.

Volunteer Management: Prior experience managing volunteers is strongly preferred, with priority given to experience organizing in minority communities.

Adaptable: Ability to move between big picture and details; self-starter with the flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team.

Communications: This position is about building effective relationships with diverse people, so it requires strong interpersonal skills and a high level of emotional intelligence. It also requires writing skills to communicate to activists, as well as to provide regular reports to the director and steering committee.

Tools: Fluency in Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint; experience with VAN a plus.

Work-Life

Working hours are generally during the standard work day, but will also include some weekend and evening duties. Be available to work a flexible schedule, average 30-35 hours per calendar week, as needed.

Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a car. Must be absolutely reliable and available by phone/text at any reasonable time.

This is an at-will position. Salary for this position is $4,000/month, prorated from start date through an anticipated end date of November 19th, with the possibility of an extension.

If hired, orientation for this position starts ASAP.
