The Sr. Engineer Track Design is responsible for preparing track alignment designs for complex track engineering projects and studies to repair, renew, reconfigure, and construct new track, turnouts and roadbed. The Sr. Engineer Track Design conducts civil and track engineering design and constructability reviews of project-related track design submittals prepared by engineering consultants, other railroads and commuter agencies to ensure adherence with Amtrak and industry best practice design standards.The Sr. Engineer Track Design mentors' junior members of the track design team, including the Engineer Track Design, Management Associates, Co-ops and Interns. The Sr. Engineer Track Design also provides technical assistance to other departments and consultants and makes engineering recommendations for consultants, and Amtrak Division Engineers and their staff. The Sr. Engineer Track Design makes field inspections to investigate site conditions before making an engineering recommendation. The Sr. Engineer Track Design may also be called on to assist in topographic and track layout surveying work and perform other duties as assigned. Additional survey type related responsibilities can include track clearance analysis using TopoDOT software to compare existing or proposed track alignments / profiles to existing conditions within point cloud data. This position is primarily in an office environment and is based out of 30th Street Station, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in civil/transportation design on rail projects.
Must have experience in horizontal and vertical railroad track alignment design. Working knowledge of AREMA and AMTRAK design criteria.
Fully proficient in using Bentley Microstation RailTrack, PowerRail, OpenRail, or Civil 3D CAD design software for all aspects of track alignment design.
Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point) Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Attention to detail.
Prior satisfactory job performance.
Must become qualified in AMTRAK training classes RWP and AMT II.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation
EIT or PE license.
6-12 years' experience in railroad/transportation engineering.
Extensive, expert user of Bentley Microstation RailTrack, PowerRail or OpenRail design CAD design software for all aspects of track alignment design on multiple projects.
Extensive use of TopoDot data extraction of mobile LiDAR-generated 3D point clouds and obstruction mapping / clearance analysis workflows.
Experience in Microsoft Office Suite software.
Experience in detailed data extraction/mapping and 3D modeling using both static and mobile LiDAR-generated 3D point clo ds using TopoDot software.
Utilizing TopoDOT software to perform clearance analysis of existing or proposed track alignments / profiles.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions.
Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to high-speed trains and/or heavy equipment and doing extensive walking. Varying work hours as project timelines evolve.
Travel: 10%COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.The salary/hourly range is $103,700-$134,460. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary.
