Komatsu's Mining Electrification Group is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to work on a diverse team that is electrifying existing mining machines. Specific Challenges include electric motor and gearbox sizing, battery and thermal management Systems, hydraulic applications, mechanisms and structural analysis.

Location: Franklin, PAKey Job Responsibilities:

Participate in a global group of engineers, technicians and business leaders to design and produce industry-leading hybrid and battery powered machines and chargers.

Perform or conduct engineering evaluations including investigations, calculations and tests to ensure that machine components and systems meet the rigorous demands of mining applications.

Lead engineering projects to develop, maintain and support components, products and/or services per market demands, as well as for continual process improvements.

Provide conceptual and strategic solutions to solve problems that are associated with electrification projects.

Take responsibility for one's own learning to understand existing products quickly in order to apply battery systems that maintain and increase machine performance.

Act as a team leader for those who are designing components, products and systems.

Participate in and support programs for effective communication of engineering issues to ensure compliance with global standards for design and safety of products and services, as well as engineering best practices.

Participate in and support improvements to streamline engineering processes used to design, develop, maintain and support components, products, and/or services.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline, required.

3-5 years' experience in engineering design, machine application, heavy equipment or mining industry, desired.

Ability to recognize and define design problems and recommend workable solutions and/or corrective action.

Experience and ability to perform in cross-functional cross-cultural team assignments required.

Experienced in the use of computer-aided design and calculation (CAD, Mathcad etc) tools, required.

Participation in implementing Lean Engineering and DFMA principles, desired.

Participation in effective Change Management implementation, desired.

Certifications or demonstrated project management, beneficial.

Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies, beneficial.

Willingness to travel 10-20% to North American and global locations, including manufacturing and underground mining sites.

Predominant Tasks:

Perform engineering evaluations, including calculations and testing as required, and advise on options for problem resolution.

Lead teams in performance of a specific task, project, or function.

Review current designs or specific components as assigned for cost reduction.

Assist in determining the cause of a field problem and propose appropriate corrective action.

Work with suppliers concerning new requirements for, or changes to their products.

Advise on, set up and perform engineering tests to satisfy loosely defined requirements.

Maintain awareness of and familiarity with Global and Regional regulations, standards and industry guidelines applying to KOMATSU MINING products and specific evolving regulations on battery powered machines.

Make field trips to design and manufacturing locations as well as underground mines to observe machines in operation and gain an understanding of their application and design parameters.

Support the production of prototype machines with hands on building and testing activities alongside shop, and engineering personnel.

Assist in the startup of new products at underground mine sites with technical advice and support.
