Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the R.N. are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, Hospital Policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Performs an assessment of all assigned patients, prior to therapy as well as an ongoing assessment during treatment.Demonstrates knowledge of bladder chemotherapy and administration of agents intravesically if a requirement to meet patient care needs.Demonstrates knowledge of administration and handling of antineoplastic medications and biological modifiers.Provide comprehensive clinical therapeutic infusion services to patients in a controlled medical setting.Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness in accordance with care plan.Demonstrates knowledge of procedure performed and is able to assist physician as indicated.Proficient in the maintenance and care of peripherally inserted central catheters and all venous access devices.Demonstrates an awareness of unit budget.Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to co-workers, and students.Takes an active role in unit-based CQI.Participates in identifying unit needs and supports unit goals and objectives.Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. May be required to float to Network Infusion Centers sites as scheduled/needed. On call rotation for Sundays/Holidays as required by department PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; 4 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, push, and carry objects up to 10 lbs. frequently lift, carry and push objects up to 75 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 400 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and or stretcher with assistance when appropriate. Consistently pull up, bend, crouch, kneel, and climb. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Occasional crawling. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Frequently finger and handle objects. Occasionally firmly grasp, twist, and turn objects with hands and fingers. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision, depth, perception, and visual monotony (e.g. computer screen). POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.At risk for cuts, punctures, being confined to small spaces, slippery surfaces, assault and battery, radiation, chemical biohazards, and injuries from operating machinery, burns and back injuries.SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:Lead aprons for radiation exposure. Follow MSDS and OSHA precautions for exposure to biological and chemical hazards. (Category 1)Follow Guidelines of the Oncology Nursing Society Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs as referenced in the Cancer Network Policy and Procedure Manual.MOST COMPLEX DUTY:Using the nursing process to provide individualized, professional nursing care to patientsSUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):Director, Infusion & Oncology Support Services and/or Clinical CoordinatorDirects care delivered by ancillary personnelCOMMUNICATIONS:Must be able to communicate with other departments, patients, families, the community and the medical staff.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:QUALIFICATIONS)(MINIMUM)EDUCATION:Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania or seek Pennsylvania licensure through reciprocity.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Successful completion of BLSBasic computer skills, preferred.Within 6 months of employment will take the Oncology Nursing SocietyEnrollment in Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course within 5 weeks of Date of Hire.
