Under supervision of the Senior Manager and the Physical Therapy (PT) Education and Development
Coordinator completes all requirements of the core curriculum, and furthermore, renders physical therapy services to an assigned caseload of children located in the outpatient setting. Able to provide services to a variety of patient types with the recognition of their own limitations while seeking appropriate mentorship as needed. Services include patient examination, evaluation, intervention, documentation, parent education, communication, and coordination with medical and allied medical staff. Actively participates in departmental education activities. Participates in the education of physical therapy and/or physical therapist assistant students. Fulfills the requirements of the Sports PT residency as specified to the APTA. Appointment as the Sports Physical Therapy Resident is for one year (12 months) with no guarantee of employment by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia beyond the one-year fellow appointment.What you will do
Clinical - Sports Physical therapy resident shall demonstrate independent and objective professional judgment in the patient's best interest.
Ensures the safety of the patient while conducting examinations/interventions
Examination: Able to perform a complete history and systems reviews and determine appropriate tests and measures based on findings. May need assistance/supervision with performance of appropriate tests and measures that are unfamiliar
Evaluation: Able to synthesize information independently obtained from the examination in the clinic and/or on-field to determine clinical diagnosis for basic, uncomplicated cases. Seeks guidance for more complex issues. Incorporates guidance received to future cases.
Diagnosis/Prognosis: Ability to identify impairments and its impact on function and disability and develop a plan of care that integrates therapy into the lifestyle of the family. May require assistance for complex cases.
Intervention: Provides procedural interventions with mentorship as needed. Patient education is
family and/or team centered by considering family lifestyle, environment, learning needs, demands of sport and collaborative goal setting. Documentation is thorough, complete, timely and reflects integration of all areas of patient care with assistance as needed. Identifies the needs for adaptive equipment and orthotic resources.
Outcomes: Results of patient/client interaction include high level of patient/caregiver satisfaction, reduced risk for impairment, promotion of wellness, identification of internal resources. May require assistance/mentorship for resources to do this. Identifies appropriate outcome measures to assess progress and determine appropriate plan of care or transitional service.

Professional Development

Participate in an educational curriculum that will address Sports Description of Specialty Practice through didactic education and clinical experience.
Attends inservices within the department and hospital as appropriate.
Clinical Education
Assists with student program by having observational and lab experiences with affiliating students. May act as a backup supervisor to a student on affiliation. Contributes to the continuing education endeavors within the department and hospital.
Seeks opportunities to share knowledge via presentations, interdisciplinary rounds or participation in staff inservices.
External Teaching Opportunities
May serves as a resource to local Physical Therapy educational programs and related disciplines by assisting in lectures and/or labs on or offsite.
Interdisciplinary Communication and Coordination of Care
Able to make judgments within their scope of practice and level of expertise and shall communicate with, collaborate with, or refer to peers or other health care professionals when necessary.

Communicates with patients/caregivers, coaches, physicians, other team members, and third party participants regarding the patient's goals and progress. Participates in patient conferences as assigned as a member of the health care team.

Conveys appropriate patient coverage information when care is provided by other staff members.
Able to identify appropriate delegation of activities to PTAs, aides, volunteers, support staff.
