Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

Develops treatment plan to meet needs of patient, based on needs assessment, patient interests and objectives of therapy. Confers with other members of treatment team to plan and evaluate therapy programs.

Plans, organizes, directs, and participates in treatment programs and activities to facilitate patients’ recovery and integration into the community.

Obtains information from medical records, medical staff, family members and the patients themselves to assess patients’ capabilities, needs and interests.

Observes, analyzes and record patients’ participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed.

Conducts recreational therapy sessions to improve patients’ mental and physical well-being.

Counsels and encourages clients with special needs and circumstances to acquire new skills and get involved in health-promoting leisure activities, such as sports, games, arts and crafts, and gardening.

Instructs patients in activities and techniques, such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques, designed to meet their specific physical or psychological needs.

Assesses inventory and ordering supplies related to patient care of therapeutic programming.

Ensures a safe environment.

Remains current on trends in health care industry and specialty through professional affiliation.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:Standing intermittently for minimum 45 minutes to 1 hour an 8 hour day. Walking intermittently. Sitting for 1 hour increments, 6 hours daily. Lifting occasionally using upper extremity, 1-10 lbs. Carrying occasionally 1-10 lbs. Push/pull occasionally 1-10lbs, rarely 11-75 lbs. Occasionally assumes varying positions at times in confined areas, including kneeling, crouching and reaching above should level. Frequently uses hands for feeling, fingering, handling and twisting rarely for firm grasping. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and must be able to identify high and low frequencies. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near and far vision, color and peripheral/depth perception.EDUCATION:Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Required: Six to eight weeks of clinical fieldwork, experience in psychosocial dysfunction.
