Position InformationJob DescriptionThe Virginia Department of State Police is seeking qualified applicants for a Communications Technician position in the Information and Communication Technologies Division located in Salem, Virginia. This is a Non-Exempt position; therefore, this position is subject to the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.DUTIES:

Provides supervisor with self evaluation and accomplishments per performance interval.

Assists with the implementation of the STARS LMR and microwave systems.

Implements, and monitors additions to the COMLINC Network in support of the Department’s goal of interoperability with the localities within the Commonwealth.

Provides technical support for both internal and external customers during special events and exercises.

Implements interoperability solutions within the STARS Network and monitors for compliance with FCC rules and regulations.

Other duties as assigned by supervision.

Minimum QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:

Working knowledge of FCC and non-Federal interoperability frequency use and application during events; and NTIA rules and regulations, interoperability and the National Incident Management System (NIMS/ICS).

Demonstrated abilities with information technologies and networking; installing, configuring, securing, and maintaining radio and network communications systems.

Demonstrated skills in operating, upgrading software, hardware for computers, using Microsoft Office applications, and performing minor computer repairs.

Demonstrated ability to maintain land mobile radio systems including microwave and two-way mobile systems for Public Safety services; to implement, secure, and maintain local and wide area networks; to work on call, overtime, nights and weekends for emergency event activations, set up and operations.

Experience instructing, lesson plan development, and user manual publications for technical operation of interoperation radio and computer equipment.

Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.

Reside within 50 miles of assigned duty post within 30 days of employment; to work independently and as a member of a team; and to foster effective working relationships with co-workers, other agency personnel, outside public safety personnel and the general public.

Extensive overnight statewide travel throughout the Commonwealth required.
