Portland Public Schools is seeking a skilled and organized mechanic to work in our Student Transportation Department on district sedans, vans, and school buses. The mechanic will work as part of a collaborative team that takes pride in ensuring students and staff are safely transported by effectively maintaining all vehicles.

This is a full-time opportunity working out of our NE Marine Drive yard and offers year-round work. The starting wage rate is $36.90/per hour plus incredible health, dental, vision, and life insurance benefits. In addition mechanics receive a tool allowance (after 1 year of service), safety shoe allowance, plus continued training. The schedule is Monday to Friday 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Job Description

Under the Fleet Maintenance Manager’s supervision, this person will perform all types of repairs; minor adjustments to major overhauls on all types of light and medium-duty school buses and other vehicles as needed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Performs all mechanical functions from minor repairs to major overhauls on school buses, Vans, mechanic vehicles, work trucks, etc. Works on all bus systems which include (but are not limited to) engine, electrical, fuel, drivetrain, and brakes.

● Troubleshoot total automotive mechanical and electrical systems to identify and correct system or equipment problems (typically, GM and Ford engines, transmissions, cooling systems, power steering systems, and electrical systems).

● Operate, maintain, and repair fuel tanks and delivery systems for gas, diesel, and propane systems.

● Perform a variety of vehicle maintenance tasks assigned to those of the machinist/mechanic trade.

● Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

● Permanent status as Journeyman Mechanic.

● Minimum of five years’ experience in mechanical-related fields.

● Five or more years of experience in the areas of engine performance; air conditioning systems; axles and differentials; wiring schematics; electrical repair; hydraulic brake system service; and transmission diagnosis.

● Experience with replacing engines and transmissions.

● Ability to pass State Fire Marshal’s Propane Fitters test.

● Ability to pass a forklift certification test.

● Possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon CDL.

● Ability to pass the Oregon Department of Education test that is required before you can perform an annual inspection on a vehicle that transports students.

COMPENSATION AND WORK SCHEDULE

● Salary: DCU - Appendix B, $36.90 per hour

● FTE: 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

● Work Year: 260 Days (year-round work)

● Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
