Two solo practitioners seek a legal assistant (mostly remote) for approximately 20 and 10 hours per week, respectively. Practice areas include criminal defense litigation and juvenile dependency and delinquency cases. The criminal defense position is hybrid: Mon-Thurs 9am-2pm, with a need to appear in-office at minimum once a week. Some light flexibility needed if case needs/emergencies arise. The juvenile law practice hours can be handled entirely remotely and is mostly scheduling and file management. Desktop and laptop provided.

Position Description:

The legal assistant is responsible for working directly with the attorneys to support their practice. The ideal candidate for this job has a skill set that includes strong technology skills and the ability to multi-task, prioritize many projects with multiple people, and adhere to fast-paced deadlines. Legal experience is not required, so do not be intimidated by the following list! Most valued is someone who is detail-oriented with a desire to learn, dependable, and possesses word-processing skills.

Duties:

Maintain client confidence by keeping client/attorney information confidential

Organize and maintain client files primarily in electronic form, update conflicts database and search for conflicts, enter and maintain contacts, docket deadlines, organize case information, and following-up on delegated assignments.

Prepare and submit court filings, including motions.

Reception duties, including answering and directing inquiries from clients; receive, scan, file, and route in-bound mail; finalize and deliver out-bound mail; send and receive faxes.

Proofread (for minor spelling and punctuation mistakes, typos, and inconsistencies)

Attend and take notes in virtual and in-person meetings.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

Strong skills in and experience with Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and One Drive or Google Drive.

Experience with Clio case management software.

Proficiency with PDF software (e.g., Kofax, Nuance, Adobe)

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Willingness to ask questions and take direction, especially when learning a new skill or program; willingness to offer suggestions if more efficient processes are possible.

Compensation:

Commensurate with prior experience with an expected 30 hours combined per week.
