Seasonal Parks Laborer
$23.10 per hour
PURPOSE OF POSITION
A position of limited duration performing a variety of tasks involved in the improvement and routine corrective and preventative maintenance of City facilities, grounds, parks, and greenways, and in logistical ground support for community events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
a) Perform sanitation at City parks, facilities, grounds, and natural areas, including litter/trash pickup, emptying trash receptacles, and cleaning public restrooms. (30%)
b) Assist with the planting, cultivation, and maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers; including fertilizing, watering, mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, and pruning. (25%)
c) Perform cleaning, power-washing, painting, and graffiti removal for parks and facilities grounds, structures, amenities, and appurtenances. (15%)
d) Perform bike/pedestrian path maintenance and trail construction and maintenance tasks, including clearing, construction, and maintenance of improved and primitive trails in natural areas and parks. (15%)
e) Assemble, inspect, and maintain playground equipment, benches, tables, picnic structures, and other park amenities. (10%)
f) Regularly operate City vehicles. Must possess a valid State issued driver’s license and an acceptable driving record (ongoing).
g) Follow all safety rules, policies and procedures established for work areas, maintain safe work habits, and contribute to the safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.
h) Maintain consistent and regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
i) Develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
j) Effectively and clearly communicate to others verbally in-person and in both electronic and physical written form.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS (5%)
Perform basic routine care and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment.
Safely and responsibly handle fertilizers and other chemical products commonly used in landscaping and grounds maintenance.
Transport, set up, and take down furniture and equipment, provide necessary amenities, and perform various other logistical ground support functions for City events and meetings, including on weekends and/or outside of regular working hours.
Maintain various records related to activities and findings as required.
Assist other departments and divisions as assigned.
Maintain work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
Perform related tasks and duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
General safe work practices and principles and safe use and handling of tools and equipment.

Safely and responsibly operate a variety of hand tools and power tools, including mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, backpack blowers, hedge trimmers, light trucks, tractors, and other similar tools and equipment.

Learn and use desktop and mobile applications and technology related to job duties.
Quickly learn to identify and avoid or mitigate hazards to oneself, coworkers, and the public that arise in the course of performing job duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalent to high school education. Knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in routine landscape maintenance and horticulture. Any satisfactory combination of experience, education, and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Preferred: Prior experience in parks grounds and landscape maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES
Valid State issued driver's license and acceptable driving record required (ongoing)
Fluent in English reading, writing, hearing, speaking and comprehension
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
Many duties are physically demanding and may require the movement of materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Movement of materials weighing 35 to 50 pounds may consume up to 30% of the work period. Duties require regular use of hand tools, shovels, weed eaters, light trucks, mowers, etc. Must be able to perform physically demanding labor for extended periods of time in all weather conditions. Activity and types of duties performed require manual coordination and dexterity for extended periods.

Works under the direct supervision of the Parks and Facilities Superintendent or designee. May receive instruction or direction from Parks Workers II and III.
