PURPOSE OF POSITION:

An entry level position, performing routine and semi-skilled work in corrective and preventative maintenance to City facilities, grounds and equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

a) Plant, cultivate and maintain lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers including fertilizing, mowing, trimming, irrigating, edging and pruning.

b) Operate and maintain mowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, light trucks, tractors, irrigation systems and other tools and equipment.

c) Maintain playground equipment, benches, tables, and picnic structures. May assist in the construction and installation of similar items and facilities.

d) Clean and sanitize public restrooms, empty trash and pick up trash at assigned parks.

e) Public Works employees are considered “essential employees” and are strictly required to report to work to perform work of an emergency nature. During an emergency, Public Works employees may be called back to work before their regularly scheduled shift or after completing their shift.

f) Follow all safety rules, policies and procedures for work areas.

g) Maintain consistent and regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.

h) Effectively and clearly communicate in English to others verbally and in both electronic and physical written forms.

i) Must develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and the public.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

May be required to assist other department/division personnel as workload or staffing levels dictate.

May set up and take down furniture and equipment for events and meetings and provide necessary amenities.

Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

Landscape maintenance practices and equipment

Ability to safely tow, turn and back up a single-axle trailer.

Equipment, materials, methods and safety precautions used in routine custodial and facilities maintenance work.

Carpentry, painting and horticulture.

Proficiency with internet applications and Microsoft Outlook.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the above duties.

Preferred:

Prior experience in the public sector; bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese and/or Russian.

Prior experience with safe and correct rate application of fertilizers and herbicides.

Prior trades experience including plumbing, HVAC and/or electrical.

Strong record-keeping skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, SharePoint, and Excel.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:

Valid Oregon or Washington driver's license and maintaining an acceptable driving record required (ongoing requirement).

Ability to obtain Oregon State Pesticide License within 6 months of hire.

Ability to safely tow, turn, and back up a single-axle trailer.

This position is classified as “safety sensitive”, must pass criminal background check and drug testing prior to placement.

May be required to report to work before or after regularly scheduled shift, or after completing shift to perform work of an emergency nature.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

Many duties are physically demanding requiring the movement of materials weighing up to 90 pounds with mechanical assistance. Movement of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds may consume up to 30% of the work period. Duties require regular use of hand tools, chain saws, material-moving devices such as shovels, operation of light and medium equipment such as pickups, and tractors. Activity and types of duties performed require manual coordination and dexterity for extended periods.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Most of the duties take place outside of buildings with exposure to all types of weather conditions and terrain on a year-round basis. All Public Works employees are considered “essential employees” and are strictly required to report to work in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions or emergencies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision is not a typical function assigned to this position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direction of the Parks & Facilities Superintendent or designee. May receive instruction or direction from Parks & Facilities Chief Operator and/or higher classified Parks & Facilities workers.
