Company Overview Spectrum Healthcare Partnersis Maine’s largest multi-specialty, physician-owned and directed professional organization and is comprised of over 200 physicians practicing in the areas of anesthesiology, orthopaedics, pain management, pathology, radiation oncology, radiology, and vascular & interventional services. Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. 4 days per week. No nights, weekends, or call. POSITION SUMMARY Responsible for treating patients in consultation with a physician or on a prescription basis. Responsible for the evaluation, treatment and implementation of a treatment plan of care for patients with hand and/or upper extremity deficits; for planning and providing occupational therapy to help patients regain physical functioning or adjust to disabilities. Selects constructive activities suited to the individual’s physical capacity to increase independence, prepare the individual for return to employment, assists in restoration of functions, and aid in adjustment to disability. Prefer certification in hand therapy, or can achieve CHT after three years of employment. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (if any) None ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Works one-on-one with patients to teach skills and techniques required for participation in activities, and evaluates individual progress.

Instructs and counsels patients and collaborates with physicians to ensure that patients receive accurate assessments and quality care.

Develops appropriate evaluation, clinical problems, associated goals, assessment, and realistic treatment plans.

Performs treatment procedures, including but not limited to: manual therapy techniques to include but not limited to joint mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, therapeutic exercises for strengthening and ROM (range of motion), therapeutic activities for appropriate work/sport specific strengthening and/or mobility, instruction in sport-, work-, and ADL (activities of daily living)-specific body mechanics, utilization of modalities (US, Estim, Ice/Heat, Biofeedback, etc.) and wound dressings/care.

Treats modalities of scar management, joint mobilization, and therapeutic exercises.

Designs and constructs custom splints and/or braces for individuals, and suggests adaptation of individual’s work-living environment.

Documents patient care services by accurately charting in the patient record.

Ensures that timely referrals are obtained and coding is accurate.

Maintains communication with physicians and staff regarding patient care.

Works with the healthcare team by providing information and education.

Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies both regionally and nationally.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Requisitions and maintains inventory of occupational supplies and equipment.

Communicates clearly and directly with supervising physician about clinical questions and utilizes the electronic medical record for documented communication when necessary.

Maintains continuity of patient care by following patients in adjunct clinical settings including other departments, and communicating patient issues to those care providers as appropriate. Assists with care in cast room.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited school with a degree as an Occupational Therapist.

Occupational Therapist with Maine Licensure by State Board of Occupational Therapy.

Certification as a Hand Therapist, desired.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, preferred.

Demonstrated clinical competence in relevant area of practice. Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, with particular knowledge of the musculoskeletal system. Current knowledge of medications and their effects on the human body.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors and other staff

Skill in time management, prioritizing and medical care coordination

Ability to organize and accomplish tasks, and have the flexibility to meet changing demands on daily basis

Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability to project and maintain a professional image

Ability to work independently and excel as part of a team

Excellent customer service skills

Proficient computer skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard and mouse

Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record keeping materials

Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/lap top computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier

Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently

Walks frequently

May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time

Risk of exposure to hazardous conditions and blood borne pathogens

Occasional reaching, twisting, bending, use of hands, fingers, tools
