Aplica ya

We are hiring an innovative part-time math teacher for 2024-2025 and beyond.

Our School

Activate is a 3rd-5th grade microschool specializing in art, hands-on learning, and dyslexia support with a balance of teacher-directed and self-directed learning. https://activateschoolpdx.com

Overview

The math teacher works from 8:00-12:00. The first 30 minutes are planning time. They teach two math blocks comprised of mixed-ability 3rd-5th graders. They also provide some 1:1 support and supervise lunch.

Our school calendar closely aligns with the PPS calendar. The math teacher will have 173 four-hour instructional days and four eight-hour planning days. There are almost no work commitments outside of these times.

Curriculum

This year we are using a blend of Montessori math and an online math curriculum. Next year, we will discontinue the online program and replace it with a non-screen alternative. We’re unsure if we’ll keep the Montessori component. It largely depends on the experience and expertise of the teacher we hire. We are considering many different frameworks, and the teacher would be a partner in curriculum-related decisions.

Responsibilities

Teach two math blocks. Each block is multi-grade and multi-ability.

Work 1:1 with students.

Conduct major summative assessments four times per year.

Write report cards three times per year.

Support a diabetic student during snack time (training will be provided).

Willing to work a full day if the director is absent.

Communicate with parents.

Our Students

We serve 18 students. They are kind, creative, curious, and joyful. Over half of our students are neurodivergent. Most of the neurodivergent students are dyslexic, dysgraphic, or both. ADHD is prevalent too. We have several students who would be identified as Talented and Gifted in their neighborhood schools.

Requirements

Have an elementary teaching license (in any state or country) or an elementary Montessori certification.

Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

Have at least a year of elementary teaching experience in a school setting.

Have a clean criminal background and be registered Oregon Department of Education Early Learning Division, Central Background Registry before working with children.

Compensation and Benefits

There are 9 personal/sick days per year.

We don’t offer health benefits, but we can offer a Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs) for employees in need of insurance. These are account-based health plans in which employees are compensated a monthly sum for their medical expenses.
