Disability Advocate

This isn’t your average support work position. If you’re into social justice, delving into your own implicit bias, and daily creative problem solving, then please continue.

This work has you regularly and consistently a part of the disability community. As a non disabled person, this can be jarring. You will be confronted with your ableism, and the discrimination our clients encounter every day. With that in mind, the majority of your work will be as an advocate and resource for our clients. We don’t “help” our clients. We passively observe their authentic experience and then step in with assistance when requested. Our goal is to be involved in their decisions as little as possible, and to limit our opinions and influence while providing thoughtful guidance.

Our clients come to us with very specific goals they want to work towards. From more engagement in the community, to housing resources. Medical/legal advocacy, transportation services, and budgeting. Sometimes they just want to go to the beach for the day, or hang out at an arcade, or sit in a bar and drink a beer in the company of someone they feel safe with. If you get squirrely when you are impatient, this job may not be for you. We are not caregivers, house cleaners, or peer support specialists.

Not going to lie, this position may require a substantial amount of driving, so a car is necessary. But as a provider, you will have free access to most places when in the company of your client. You will be assigned a work phone and tablet to manage documents protected through HIPAA, and the paperwork is plentiful. You will work closely with your coworkers and Department Lead to create a full time and flexible schedule, interview potential client matches, and shadow 1:1 Client/Advocate interactions until you are comfortable working on your own.

Requirements for the job:

-Access to a reliable vehicle with valid drivers license and current insurance.

-Ability to work a full time schedule (35-40 hours a weeks).

-Can pass a background check.

-Experience with the disability community is not necessary, but higher starting wages are offered to those who do.

-Comfortable working in a professional setting alongside multiple support team members, and possess the ability to self manage.

Benefits:

-100% covered medical, vision, and dental eligibility after 90 days of employment.

-40 hours of sick time, 40 hours of PTO after 90 days of employment.

-Mileage reimbursement, Paid Training, room for growth.

This position has a starting wage of $20-$25 DOE.
