Nye Beach Montessori School is committed to creating a diverse and high quality learning environment for students of all abilities to reach their full potential. The Classroom Assistant will work directly with the Director and Lead Teacher, and will assist in establishing and maintaining a harmonious classroom. Classroom Assistants will collaborate with the Lead Teacher to prepare and maintain an orderly, attractive, and joyful environment. They provide another pair of observant, attentive eyes and ears to the classroom. Classroom Assistants are also crucial in modeling courteous and respectful behavior as well as contributing to the warm, supportive, and calm atmosphere that is the hallmark of an authentic Montessori environment. Full training will be provided so that the Classroom Assistant has a clear understanding of their responsibilities.
The assistant position is from approximately 8:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Thursday.

Prime functions
- Maintain the Montessori classroom environment
Clean-up of the classroom by ensuring that it is always tidy
Prepare materials for the following day
Custodial duties such as sweeping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms
- Assist the Lead Teacher
Observe and take notes on the children’s behavior and activities
Model grace and courtesy (proper social behavior)
Preserve and protect lessons (the Lead teacher’s one-on-one interaction with students)
Communicate with the lead teacher of any classroom difficulties including discipline, health, equipment needs, repair, and maintenance.
Assist in preparation/production of instructional materials.
Perform clerical tasks, i.e. answering the phone and copying.
Meet regularly with the lead teacher to discuss goals for the class and individual students
- Assist in establishing and maintaining the Montessori classroom culture, paying particular attention to the needs of the students.
Engage students within the classroom by interacting and thinking about what is happening around them, always being available to offer gentle and respectful guidance
Assist in the development of independence
Help with small and large group activities
Supervise children on the playground and on field trips
Implement behavior management strategies and plans
Read aloud or listen to children read
Provide personal care assistance to children
Duties will vary depending upon the age of the students as well as their individual abilities.
- Function as a part of the School Team
Be punctual and perform all duties with a positive attitude
Share all information from parents with lead teacher
Assist in organizing field trips
Participate in staff meetings, school events, workshops, and conferences
Keep information confidential
Be professional and positive in all dealings with students and parents
Maintain certifications and professional development training
Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Pass Criminal Background Registration check
- Have current CPR, First Aid, Food Handler, and other trainings (school can help with these)
- Have a high school diploma
- Have demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others
- Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
- Have willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
- Ability to adapt to the changing needs of children and the school environment
- Outstanding classroom management that relies on positive and proactive reinforcement of high behavioral standards.
