Shop Welder-Fabricator/Mechanic

Position Summary

As a vital member of our team, the experienced Welder-Fabricator/Mechanic will leverage their dual expertise in welding and mechanical repair to maintain and enhance our fleet of diesel trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. In this role, you will perform high-quality welding and fabrication work, diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, and contribute to our mission of delivering safe and reliable transportation solutions. Your skills will ensure optimal fleet performance, reliability, and safety, while working collaboratively with a dedicated shop team to meet and exceed operational deadlines.

Essential Duties

Inspect completed work to ensure it meets quality and safety standards.

Perform high-quality welding and fabrication work on diesel trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment using advanced welding techniques (MIG, TIG, arc welding).

Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical issues to ensure maximum vehicle reliability.

Conduct daily preventative maintenance checks, including oil changes, filter replacements, and vehicle inspections to uphold fleet standards.

Collaborate with mechanics and shop personnel to leverage combined expertise for efficient repairs and innovative fabrication solutions, ensuring timely project completion.

Use hand and power tools safely to assist in both welding and mechanical repairs.

Disassemble engines to inspect and repair parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, and bushings.

Ensure compliance with OSHA, FMCSA, and DOT standards during all repair activities.

Regular and predictable attendance is a fundamental requirement for this position, as it is essential for maintaining operational continuity, fostering effective teamwork, and upholding safety standards. Consistent presence enables the timely completion of repairs and projects, ensuring we meet customer commitments and maintain the high-quality service our clients expect.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain accurate records of both welding tasks and mechanical repairs performed.

Perform additional duties as required to support overall shop operations.

Adhere to safety protocols and ensure welding is performed in compliance with OSHA and company standards.

Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and welding-related issues.

Maintain and operate welding tools and equipment to avoid hazards and ensure job efficiency.

Address driver-reported defects (DVIR), ensuring timely repairs.

Keep accurate documentation for all repair and fabrication tasks.

Work with the Shop Manager to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.

Train and mentor less experienced mechanics and welders as needed.

Respond swiftly to breakdowns to minimize vehicle downtime and get trucks back in service.

Operate diagnostic software for troubleshooting and repairing mechanical issues.

Your contributions will enhance our ability to meet both operational goals and compliance requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Self-motivated and capable of working independently without regular management oversight.

Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in welding and mechanical repair on diesel trucks or heavy equipment.

Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and arc welding techniques.

Experience with diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

Ability to use diagnostic software and tools for mechanical troubleshooting.

Strong knowledge of DOT and OSHA safety regulations.

Working knowledge of hand and power tools.

Valid driver's license; Class A CDL preferred.

Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test in compliance with company policy.

Dependable attendance and strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a diesel truck or heavy equipment repair environment.

Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and compliance in a welding environment.

Clean driving record as reflected in an MVR over the past three (3) years, with no serious traffic violations or major preventable accidents.

Welding certification from an accredited trade school or program.

Vocational certification in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment repair.

Familiarity with FMCSA regulations and vehicle maintenance compliance.

CDL license preferred for post-repair test driving.

Clean driving record for the past three (3) years with no serious violations.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Welding certification or relevant vocational training preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving parts and materials up to 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs. with assistance. It involves prolonged standing, kneeling, bending, and working in awkward or elevated positions, including under vehicles, often on hard surfaces, while performing mechanical repairs, welding, or fabrication tasks. The role also demands dexterity and precision for detailed welding work, such as cutting, grinding, and fabricating components in tight or confined spaces. Safe use of hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment is essential, often involving repetitive motion and fine motor skills. Candidates must also be willing to work in non-climate-controlled conditions while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, welding helmets, and safety glasses.
