Job Hours: Part-time (approximately 30 hours per week)

Temporary (not to exceed 950 hours over 7-month period (April- October 2024))

Non-represented, Non-benefited, Grant-funded

Grades: B21- B22

$20.74- $29.04/hour (Grade B21), $23.13- $32.38/hour (Grade B22), depending on experience and based on State of Oregon defined bona fide factors in accordance with Oregon's Pay Equity Act.

Overview:

Springfield Public Library seeks an enthusiastic, passionate, and self-motivated individual to serve as our Outreach Specialist for the summer of 2024, during the months of April through October. Under the direction of the Associate Manager, the Outreach Specialist will put into action outreach programs to promote the benefits of library services and reading to at-risk communities where they live, attend school, and play. The bulk of this person's work time will occur over the summer months assisting with pop-up events at parks, housing complexes and free lunch sites. They will also assist with summer reading kick-off events, creating craft and educational kits, and helping at our weekly summer plaza performances. Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities May Include:

Works closely with Librarians, the Community Engagement Specialist, and library management to carry out plans and implement outreach activities to promote library services

Builds on existing partnerships with local community organizations to plan and coordinate outreach activities

Assists in planning and implementing five pop-up library events at various locations in the community

Drives the library outreach van to pop-up library locations

Assists at Wednesday morning plaza programs, which includes setting up tents, equipment, and crowd management

Plans and prepares take-home educational materials to expand the learning experience of plaza programs

Promotes and assists with the library’s summer reading program

Represents the library at community events

Collaborates with the library’s Latino Liaison to provide outreach services to the Latinx Community.

Aids in the evaluation of outreach effectiveness

Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records

Performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the position description, but which are within the general parameters of the position

Education / Experience:

The City will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications. Such a way to meet minimum qualifications could include:

Associate degree or 2 years post-secondary schooling in the fields of social services, library science, Spanish language, education, or a related field, and;

1-2 years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: programs involving youth, families or adults; event coordination; providing public or customer service. (Grade B21)

3-5 years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: community outreach/engagement, teaching, public relations, or event planning (Grade B22)

Preferences may be given for knowledge and experience:

Bilingual Spanish/English

Experience coordinating and conducting events for youth, families and adults

Experience working with Springfield community service organizations

Experience working or volunteering in a public or school library

Licenses & Certifications:

Valid Oregon Driver’s license by time of appointment

Physical Requirements:

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This position walks and conducts library events, which may limit sitting for only a few minutes.

Incumbent will be required to drive a van, and set up and take down equipment, which may weigh up to 20 pounds.
