Location: Alton Baker Park in Eugene (plus bike paths around town)
Nearby Nature seeks an instructor for the summer of 2025 to serve as a teacher for our outdoor summer bike camps. At Nearby Nature, individuals with varied backgrounds, life experiences, and abilities are valued and encouraged to thrive. We are excited to train – as well as learn from – all new staff members. Not all of the qualifications listed below are hard and fast requirements. Your work experiences can include both paid and unpaid positions, all of which help build competence, knowledge, and skills. Required Qualifications:
Experience leading youth bike rides for kids ages 6-11, basic bike maintenance skills, and knowledge of safe biking practices; familiarity with local bike paths preferred, but not required
Experience teaching outdoors
Experience supervising children
Ability to work eight hours on your feet and on a bike (with appropriate breaks)
Knowledge of natural history (Pacific Northwest preferred)
Commitment to creating an inclusive and safe learning environment for all
Understanding of trauma-informed teaching practices
Enthusiasm, sense of humor, flexibility
Strong interpersonal communication skills
First Aid-CPR Certification (or commitment to obtain this) and up-to-date COVID vaccinations
Desired Skills:
Experience designing curriculum preferred, but not required
Spanish language fluency preferred, but not required
Responsibilities:
Lead 12 kids (8-11 years old) on daily bike rides for four weeks of camp and 12 kids (6-8 years old) on shorter bike rides for one week. Rides happen on separated bike paths as well as city street bike paths.
Create daily lesson plans based on existing curriculum and the input of Program Manager
Lead daily activities with an emphasis on safety, exploration, discovery, and fun
Supervise both teen and adult volunteers
Be a positive and inspiring role model for campers and volunteers
Attend paid staff trainings starting in spring 2025 (some via Zoom)
Commit to teaching bike camps Monday-Friday, 8 am-5 pm, for five weeks this summer. Other non-biking weeks may also be available.
Salary: $850 per week for full-day programs, plus hourly wage of $17 for trainings/additional projects
