Schilling’s Garden Market is a destination property that offers a truly memorable shopping experience, from the unique plants in our nursery to the curated wares in our farm stand. We are located on the Old Bend Redmond Highway, tucked into the Central Oregon landscape. As a family owned and oriented retail garden market, our nursery specializes in hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs for the High Desert region.
The Plant Care Manager monitors and maintains all aspects of plant care operations. We are seeking an individual who is experienced with horticulture, outdoor/greenhouse work, and leadership. We value the cultivation of positive workplace relationships, so ideal candidates should be team minded, good-natured, motivated, and dependable.
This is a working manager position and will require availability on Sat/Sun and some holidays.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Train new team members on standard operating procedures and daily tasks, including safety policies and use of machinery and tools.
Work with Retail Manager to delegate associates for assistance with nursery stock maintenance/care.
Serve as a positive leader for the team; consistently model Schilling’s values and mission.
Determine necessary requirements for temperature control, IPM, thinning, weeding, irrigating, and fertilizing, based upon seasonality and plant health.
Create IPM monitoring plan, protocol and procedure for weeds, insects and pests.
Accurately identify pests and ill plants, serve as the point of contact for nursery associates to report related findings; develop and facilitate corrective action as needed.
Oversee the proper sanitation and storage of all plant trays, containers, tools, and tables.
Perform daily inspections to check health and quality of nursery stock.
Keep all plant care equipment in working order (heaters, fans, watering equipment, etc.) and report any needed maintenance to Owners.
Maintain accurate time and production records for propagation, fertilization, and IPM inspection/application.
Safely and confidently operate onsite equipment.
Develop plans and procedures to accomplish deadlines; communicate with Owners to express/determine plant care needs and report task progress.
Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
Assist in the creation of annual plant care budget; manage the budget for IPM products, relevant equipment/tools, etc. to track costs and expenses.
Collaborate with the Purchasing Manager regarding plant care ordering needs.
Demonstrate relevant product and company knowledge by independently and effectively communicating information to customers and other employees.
Ensure the premises and service levels are maintained to excellent standards, deal with customer inquiries and complaints in a professional way.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Extensive knowledge of horticulture practices in a nursery environment; ability to accurately identify individual plant genera and species including various trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals.
Detailed knowledge of botanical nomenclature, general plant care techniques, and pest identification; can accurately identify symptoms and causes of garden pests and common plant ailments.
Knowledge of local climate needs and challenges in a nursery and greenhouse.
Experience with beneficial insects, pesticide, fungicide, and herbicide application; understands the inner workings of applicator devices.
Proficient in the use and operation of hand tools and power equipment (ATV, side by side, other farm/horticultural equipment).
Ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose technological/computer issues.
Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate with customers, peers, and management. This includes applicable proficiency in the use of electronic communication devices (phones/computers)
Ability to work as a part of a team, multitask, and take initiative.
Ability to create tasks lists and accomplish or delegate duties as needed.
Be extremely prompt, organized, trustworthy, clean, motivated, good-natured, flexible, and dependable.
Must have a positive attitude and solid interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENETS
Willingness to participate in a drug-free work environment.
Must be available to work weekends and company blackout dates.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
Ability and willingness to work in greenhouses and outdoors, in all seasonal temperatures and conditions.
Capable of lifting 50+ pounds on a regular basis.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
3+ years of horticultural and/or agricultural experience.
1+ years of experience taking part in a pest management program.
Pesticide Applicators License is preferred but not required.
