JOB SUMMARY

The Campus Engineer/Technician ensures a clean and safe environment for the students and staff at PBCCS. Under minimal supervision, the Campus Engineer/Technician plans, organizes, and implements the ongoing maintenance and caretaking of the school building and grounds. This staff member makes routine decisions in collaboration with other facilities staff. Methods to be used in accomplishing non-routine assignments are determined in conjunction with the administrator and Crook County School District. This position requires experience in basic construction, plumbing, grounds and irrigation, cleaning/floors (waxing), all levels of building maintenance (HVAC, septic, water, electrical, security, etc.). This staff member performs support services for special projects, school events and public facilities use. This staff member must enjoy serving people in a physical, tactical way every day. This person must be a team-player with good communication skills and a positive attitude that serves students and staff. The Campus Engineer/Technician works under the general supervision of the school administrator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Prepares maintenance and groundskeeping schedules to ensure appropriate caretaking of the school buildings, playground and grounds.

Performs routine facilities maintenance including changing light bulbs, painting, woodwork, furniture and equipment.

Opens the building each school day. Sees that all systems are up and running.

Inspects building and grounds to determine maintenance and custodial needs as well as fire, sanitary, security and safety hazards.

Confers with staff, administrator and district personnel regarding future custodial, building and grounds keeping activities.

Receives and processes job requests for services and repairs, taking the lead to accomplish requests.

Collaborates with other facilities staff to identify tasks and assigns duties when appropriate.

Supervises and performs maintenance work on school buildings, using appropriate carpentry, plumbing tools, etc.

Receives, stores, issues and accounts for necessary supplies and equipment according to state and federal guidelines.

Coordinates the ordering of supplies and equipment with the Administrator. Prepares orders to be processed.

Reports needed work for repair, prepares bids and coordinates services with the Administrator and district personnel when appropriate.

Performs daily cleaning duties and emergency clean up, as needed, to maintain a safe and healthy school environment.

Assists custodian and substitute custodian in doing their work properly, giving instructions and training new personnel.

Perform groundskeeping and landscaping duties including mowing, irrigation and weeding.

Perform maintenance on groundskeeping equipment and tools, and make minor repairs as necessary.

Keeps files for equipment manuals and warranties.

Updates and maintains MSDS files and lockdown/tag out information.

Provides contact phone numbers for call out lists and responds to after hour and weekend emergencies such as fire alarms, security alarms, snow removal, water leaks and vandalism. This duty may require adjustment of regular work hours necessary to deal with the problem.

Keeps records and is knowledgeable about cleaning materials, equipment, methods, procedures and the State Fire Code as it applies to the school buildings.

Operates the campus buildings’ heating and ventilation systems, fire alarms and fire-fighting equipment.

Attends training sessions, as requested and required.

Utilizes district personnel as a source of aid in solving technical problems.

Removes snow and ice following district procedures prior to school opening and throughout the day as required by weather conditions.

Performs periodic large-scale deep cleaning activities during the times when school is not in session.

Moves/stores items at any given time per the Administrator (classroom furniture, set up chairs)

Fulfills other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

The employee receives requests for various types of service from staff, students, parents and public. Some of these requests include refilling paper dispensers, cleaning cafeteria spills, replacing light bulbs, hanging pictures, setting up meeting rooms, following IPM on insects/pests, minor repairs, cleaning up human and animal waste. This employee needs to be able to prioritize requests in order to effectively perform assigned tasks.

It is important that this employee enjoys working with students, staff, parents, and the public. This employee's assigned shift is normally scheduled during those daytime hours when students, staff and public are present.

Certain situations may require changing work hours, days, and locations. The employee's supervisor has the authority to adjust the assigned shift's hours, days and work location for this employee. The employee must be capable of climbing a ladder in order to install lights, clean out rain gutters, and retrieve playground/athletic equipment. This employee also needs to be able to lift materials, trashcans, waxes, equipment and tables weighing up to 50 pounds and/or maneuver equipment, supplies and furniture weighing up to 100 pounds. Heavy lifting of items weighing above 50 pounds should be performed in a team-lift arrangement or with the aid of tools such as hand carts or dollies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Knowledge

Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.

Requirements for maintaining school buildings and ground in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine building and grounds maintenance.

Operation of all campus facility systems: examples include HVAC, plumbing/water, septic, irrigation.

Safety practices.

Skills & Abilities

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to bend, twist, stoop, walk, climb, reach, carry, lift, push, pull, drag, and stand for up to 8 hours per day.

Basic computer skills required to send/retrieve emails, work orders, etc.

Basic phone and communication skills.

Interpret and apply rules, regulations and policies.

Manage and supervise one or more custodial personnel assigned to a school, to plan and organize their work and to see that the work is accomplished effectively.

Lay out work and estimate time, tools and materials used.

Learn the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the work, as required by the position.

Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing, with various staff, students, in accordance with educational standards.

Obtain or possess a valid Oregon driver's license and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage, as required by the position.

Adhere to the school requirement for a drug-free workplace.

Maintain current standards regarding handling of blood borne pathogens, asbestos and hazardous chemicals.

Learn to deal with bodily fluids.

Work independently, efficiently and reliably.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma and one to two years of advanced education/experience in the specific job requirements. The position requires the application of general principles or techniques and training not normally received in a high school. The position requires working knowledge of several technical procedures or work activity areas and ability to teach them to others. This position requires experience in basic construction, plumbing, grounds and irrigation, cleaning/floors (waxing), all levels of building maintenance (HVAC, septic, water, electrical, security, etc.). In-depth knowledge of work-related school policies and practices is necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in twelve to twenty-four months.
